If you have a guitar with pickupcovers, and you want to replace them, can you just order regular pups and put them in the covers?

thanks,

Re: Pickup covers

talkin about replacing the pickups inside his covers that he already has, i believe.

Re: Pickup covers

I haven't had much luck putting non SD covers on SD pickups, although others have said they work fine. What kind of pickups do you have now, and what kind of pickups are you looking for? It's not a whole lot of difference in price to order SD pickups with the covers installed.

Re: Pickup covers

You'll have to unsolder, remove, cleanup, prep the new pups, re-solder and re-pot those old covers on to the new pups to make them work right. The old covers could easily be damaged in the process. Better if you either get pups with covers already installed as per Jeff H or buy new covers (cheap), install and pot them in wax if you feel in the mood for making a little project out of this.

First time poster....Hello guys

panamang, I have a similar situation....not to hijack your post baby evil. Bought a used PG neck w/out a cover and a new SH-11 w/ cover for bridge. I also want to add a cover to the PG. What's the wax potting process like? Where do you get the wax and what kind? A good place to get an SD cover?

Re: Pickup covers

Do a search of the forum I have described a cheap and easy method a couple of times.

There has been several posts on this subject (do a search) and some people have different methods of doing this. Generally, you use parrafin wax for humbuckers and beeswax for single coils. Some people blend the parrafin with like 10% beeswax. I bought my parrafin wax from good ole Ace Hardware (2 blocks). I then put it a crock pot set on low so that it will melt at 140 to 150 degrees. With the covers soldered on to the new pups, set up a wire or string with support so that the covered assy will be submerged in the melted wax but not touching the bottom of the crock pot. Pickups should be face down and let them soak for 10 to 20 minutes (some say less and some say more time). You should see little bubbles coming out while soaking. Pull them out of the bath and clean them up after they cool. That's about it. Other people have different ways of potting but that's how I do it. It works and you don't get microphonic feedback. Oh yeah, I bought my chrome covers from ebay. Someone else can chime in for other sources.

Re: Pickup covers

Parafin wax has worked fine for me on many occasions to pot covers on pickups. Some folks mix in beeswax, but I've never found it necessary.

The method described above works just fine. Melt the wax, wait for it to cool a bit so it's not scalding and melts the wires. Press the cover on tight and solder in place. Put the pickup in upside down and let the wax seep into all of the crevaces, until air bubbles stop comming out. Remove and place upside down on wax paper or something similar until the wax hardens. Clean and install.

Re: Pickup covers

I've got the SD pickup covers in stock if your interested.
