Pickup dilemma

Hey,

I will be purchasing a maple neck-through guitar with alder body wings. I was thinking of installing the jb/jazz combo but I heard they might sound too bright when combined with those woods. Would they be too bright? I play mostly metal (Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Metallica). However, I want a clear and smooth neck tone. If not the jb/jazz, what do you recommend?

Re: Pickup dilemma

I don't find the Jazz too bright, I find it pretty much "the" neck pickup from the ones I've tried. Clear and smooth, yes. Yes!

I find the JB too bright and hot, although it otherwise is a very good pickup. You could like it, of course.

Re: Pickup dilemma

Neck through guitars are usually on the brighter side, so I'd reccomend a Custom Custom/Pearly Gates combo instead. What amp do you play through?

Re: Pickup dilemma

Right now I am playing through a Randall G2 75w combo. However, I wont be playing out of this for much longer. I will be purchasing a high gain amp after I purchase my guitar.

Re: Pickup dilemma

I have a Carvin DC127 with the same construction as your guitar (mine is string thru with an ebony fingerboard).

I installed a JB I had lying around at one point just to see how it would sound. I was surprised by how good it is in that guitar. It sounds great with heavy OD and fantastic clean.

Re: Pickup dilemma

the jb/jazz was designed to use with 250k pots in a tele. that is probably the reason why it is perceived as bright when used in a typical scenario where humbuckers are paired with 500k pots unless its a pretty dark guitar like a les paul.

Re: Pickup dilemma

Benjy,

What a coincidence, the guitar I will be getting is also a DC127. However, mine will have a Floyd Rose. Would it be possible to go into a bit more detail about the sound of each pickup and what amp/effects you use?
