I just purchased a 76 SG standard and im going to replace the crappy dimarzio pu's with sd's. My question is this, which bridge pickup do i want for a Social Distortion kinda sound. Also what neck pickup for a really full round tone. Thanks you guys have been alot of help in the past. Also i believe it to have stock pots. Should they be changed to and if so what sould i use.

Hate to admit this, but don't know who Social Distortion is. :blackeye:

For a full round tone from the neck pickup, and APH-1 HB would be the ticket. Think Slash's tone on November Rain, solo's on Heavens Door, really smooth and creamy.

Also what kind of an amp do you use. Are you going to get a lot of your distortion from your amp, or are you looking to hit it hard with a high output pup?

***edit, duh, you sig says 67' Bassman. I think a Custom would fit the bill nicely, or perhaps a C5 if you wanted a little more vintage vibe then the ceramic of the Custom provides.

I agree with the APHn, it's a very full, smooth tone that doesn't get boomy or muddy. Change out the pots too. Get some CTS pots and orange drop caps and throw out the stock Gibson stuff that's in there now.

I also don't know what Social Distortion is, but the Custom sounds just tits throught my 71 BF Bassman Export amp.

Re: Pickup for 76 SG

social distortion is a very old punk band from orange county. They are just that, distortion only. Pretty searing distortion but not the modern hi-gain stuff. Think Les Paul Custom through a cranked JCM 800. I'm thinking i need the custom and aph and to invest in a marshall.

Actually, the early Marshall's were based on the Bassman circuit. You may be closer to that tone than you think. I'm not very famalier with the value of 60's bassmans, so not sure how some simple mods would affect that, but there are things that can be done to get you more grind out of that amp.

I think you've got a pretty decent setup to get some great tones out of what you've got.

Re: Pickup for 76 SG

Just so's you know: Fender Bassman amps from the 60's and 70's have little in commen with the Fender Bassman from the 50's. Totally differant amp design and tone. The Marshall JTM-45 is a copy of the 50's tweed Bassman...NOT the 60's blackface or silverface version.

It's a commen misunderstanding.

As for the SG, a set of 59s would be my suggestion. Clapton/Cream, AC/DC, etc. tone.
