Hi there
I have a tele American special but i find hard to get that sparkling Summers tone out of it. Can anybody suggest a replacement for the bridge position? Neck is just fine.
Thanks
Lorenzo

Re: Pickup for Andy Summers

The pickups in Andy Summers' well-known Custom Telecaster / Telecaster bitsa guitar are both overwound. There is also a pre-amp built in to the extended control cavity.

On Police recordings, some of the clean sparkle derives from using a Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus amplifier. On stage, Summers' amp rig was different and never produces that same bright, "hard" sound.

Be aware that Summers often used other guitars in the studio, ranging from a mid-Sixties Stratocaster and Gibson ES-335 to a Nineties headless Klein design with EMG pickups.

Thanks. Of course i know about the pre amp circuit. But having the less twangy of all pickups on the market (texas special) i was wondering what to mount to increase the brightness as much as I can.

Re: Pickup for Andy Summers

I have a Fender Lone Star Set with 2 TS singles and a Pearly Gates Plus Humbucker. With the standard 250k volume i found it a bit dark while the humbucker was brite enough. i changed the volume to a low reading 500k pot (actually 470k) and installed a 500k resistor in parallel to the humbucker at the switch. A lot better now: brite but full singles compared to the briter humbucker. if you need the schematic, ask me.

Re: Pickup for Andy Summers

A Tele bridge with no baseplate would increase the brightness a lot, probably too much.

Nothing has that hard cool sparkle like a JC120. Very different indeed from tube amp sparkle.

Most of the cleaner Tele pickups are intended for a more vintage direction. For this kind of tone I'd probably recommend an EQ pedal rather than a pickup change.

The preamp and the phase switch are important parts of his tone.

Thanks everyone. Yes indeed an EQ seems to be the best thing. No pickups swapping. Cheers.
