pickup for les paul classic

i have a gibson les paul classic, the ceramic magnet pickups are way to hot and bright. my playing style is along the lines of van halen, gnr, led zep, hendrix, velvet revolver, pearl jam, and just rock. i was thinking of putting in two alnico 2 pro humbuckers and just wanted to hear what everyone thinks. i dont know to much about gibson pickups and i know slash's tone is beautiful and he uses these and ive heard great things about these. thanx

I've got APIIH in the neck of my LP Classic. I use it for milder music though, and I like it very much. For high-gain, it sounds pretty good also. Not quite as articulate as Jazz, in my opinion, but still a nice sugary sweet sound.

I have a Les Paul Classic Plus (Epiphone) and I was thinking about putting an Alnico 2 pro in the neck and a custom custom in the bridge, I hear it is a good combination.

I think a pair of Alnico II Pros would do that stuff excellently. You could also consider Pearly Gates, Seths or Antiquities. All are vintage output alnico II pickups and would be a great improvement on the Gibson ceramics for the style of music you mention.

Unless you are playing that bridge APH2 into a Jubilee with the master volume on at least 7 you are not going to get Slash's "beautiful" tone. My friends guitar player has a set of APH2's in his Les Paul, the neck is great but the bridge sounds flat and lifeless. He usually plays through a Line6 setup but I heard him play through a Slash head as well, I had some hope of a good sound but it was as uninspiring as usual. I do not think that you will get most of the tones you are looking for out of that pickup in the bridge.

Dunno about the bridge, yet in mine an a2p in the neck was simply too round. I love PG's in both positions. Ants and Seths are definitely worth every penny. And finally don't forget to check a5 PAF clones in the bridge, a 59b for example.

Hi,

I have an armada of LPs, many of which are still in the shop getting their SDs, but I do have a few back, and I can report on those. First, remember that Page actually has a real deal '59 as his main guitar, so that's a clue on his tone, although he uses a bunch of stuff after it, and of course has "Jimmy Page" wiring on his '59 for all that killer phase stuff. I say stick with A2P's, although mine aren't back yet, just because of GNR, and the seeming consensus that appears to be forming here. Personall I truely dig my PGs but I play differently than you do. I have some '57 Gibsons in an old beat up LP Standard that are OK, but I'd recommend trying something else first for pure rock.
