How high am i supposed to keep the pickup for maximum output? and how could i measure the height? right now, i have the pickup (duncan distortion) really close to the strings and i have the bass side tilted abit higher than the treble side to get a really chunky tone, the pickup is maybe like half an inch away from the strings...is that too high?

Re: pickup height question

You measure the PU/string height by holding the strings down at the last fret. The distance from pole pieces to strings should be around 1/8" or so. If you have the bass side of the PU up higher, they may overpower the high strings, especially if you have the bass on the amp turned up. But if you're playing rhythm and not much lead, that won't be a big problem.

Re: pickup height question

I don't measure and just keep it simple. The strings should not touch your pickup when you are palm muting so just move up the pickup as high as you can, but not so high that the strings touch it when you are playing at your heaviest. Once you've got the pickup up high but in a safe zone from your strings you can adjust slightly to taste.
