pickup height recommendation

rude mood

New member
i recently got my strat a set of SSL-1/SSL-1 RW/SSL-5.
i want to set the pickup height, can anyone say what's the recommended settings?

Re: pickup height recommendation

No one can really tell you.

It depends on what you like, your effects, your amp, your speakers.

Just experiment with different heights and tilts until you find what seems to be the best to your ears.

Some will say that the pickup too close to the strings will produce ghosting notes or whatever but there are photos of Eddie Van Halen doing just this and having his pickup just about touching the strings with a PAF like pickup and then there are photos where he's doing the exact opposite with a hotter pickup being far away from the strings, so in others words just use your ears and forget any so called rules.

Why don't people read a thread before answering ??? :banghead:

The guy has SINGLES not humbuckers... they will most def cause wolf tones if too close !!

I've found 4/32 on the bass and 3/32 on the treb works best on singles. :friday:

Re: pickup height recommendation

+1 on what wolf said. Start with the figures he gave and tweak from there.

I would add that I judge the magnet-to-string distance with the string depressed at the top fret. You may find that the SSL-5 finishes up further away from the strings than the SSL-1s.

Re: pickup height recommendation

Some years ago I directly asked to Seymour Duncan Customer Care the same question, that's the answer for an SSL-1:

"Hello Marcello,

Press the strings down at the highest fret on the neck.
On the high E-string side set the PU about 2mm from the strings.
On the low E-string side set the PU about 3-4mm from the strings."

That's the initial setup, then you have to find the sweet spot according to your taste.

Re: pickup height recommendation

Who cares if they are singles or not.

Just use your ears.

If the height causes ghosting then back it off.

Maybe a bit of ghosting is what someone likes.

There are other things like how your whole chain responds to the pickup height to consider as well.

It aint Rocket Science.

Re: pickup height recommendation

guys thanks for the advice.

i will def try this as a starting point.
i just found out that john frusciante has also the ssl-1 on his strats, which was a big surprise for me (and a good one!).
regarding to effects chain, i think pickups should be adjusted on a clean tone only.

happy new year too all of you!

And there you go BANG! thats the ultimate answer.. Thank you so much

Re: pickup height recommendation

I can take measurements on several of my strats, but I generally like my single coils lower..
