Pickup in the new EVH Charvel...

The specs of these guitars are kind of suprising, they have a basswood body, which i dont think the ones Ed used ever did. Oh well, anyone know about the pickup in these guitars or who makes it? Just Charvel? I saw Van Halen at Arco Arena last month and he used one on "Up for Breakfast" and nothing else. His tone on that song is less bassy and more midrangey sounding than his Wolfgang tone.

Re: Pickup in the new EVH Charvel...

I believe that the new EVH models use a Duncan 78 (or EVH - evenly voiced harmonics) model.

The Charvel that Eddie used was an ash bodied strat style (at least his black and yellow one - which is in my opinion his best one). I think that the black and white and later the black, white and red one was also ash. I think that he chose basswood for the new Charvels because that is what his Wolgangs are. But that is just a guess.

Re: Pickup in the new EVH Charvel...

Yah, they were ash thats why its funny that these are basswood. And no, its not a 78' model humbucker, that i do know. Ed has said that he thought that the black and yellow one looked great but sounded really bad, thats why he retired it after the VH II tour that it was created for. Also, Ed didnt use floyd rose trems until later on and didnt use them in the studio. The Custom Custom was supposedly created to get a thicker sound in the thinner sounding floyd rose equipped guitars, so maybe its more along those lines sound wise, not like a 78'....

Re: Pickup in the new EVH Charvel...

This is what I took from www.charvel.com.

Basswood body, bolt-on quartersawn Eastern hard rock maple neck with specially formulated oil finish, Maple fingerboard, 1 5/8" nut width, 22 Jumbo frets, 25 1/2" scale, Custom wound EVH Humbucking pickup, Floyd Rose Original tremolo, Black pickguard, and chrome hardware.

It could be he has Dimarzio winding his pickups again like when he was with EB/MM. I had just assumed that when they said custom wound EVH pickup they meant the 78 but gave it the popular misnomer. Of course, on Charvel's 25th Anniversiary model they do have the 78. But that is neither here nor there.

Re: Pickup in the new EVH Charvel...

"Special Wound EVH Humbucker, mounted directly to body"

Nobody from Jackson/Charvel, SD or Dimarzio seems ready (or available) for any comment on this, although I must admit that I have not attempted myself this time ;)

Re: Pickup in the new EVH Charvel...

I talked to John Walker, Product Manager for Jackson / Charvel, and he confirmed that the pickups in the EVH guitars are wound by Fender.

However, the pickups in the Charvel 25th Anniversary Model are genuine custom shop '78s.

I hope that helps.

Is Eddie parting ways with Peavey?
