Pickup issue

I have wound a 6 string pickup and it's great. 21k, loud, punchy, brilliant. Tonight, I wound an 8 string version of the same thing.., same wire, same amount of turns, same magnet, the lot. DCR reads 28.8k but, it's much quieter and not at all like it's original 6 string variant.

What has gone wrong..?

Re: Pickup issue

You have a wider bobbin, so the same amount of turns will end up sounding different than on a 6 string pickup. But it shouldn't be as drastic as you have described. Have you considered that you night have it in parallel instead of series?

Re: Pickup issue

No, I had that problem with the initial 6. It read half the DCR that, I should have had. That was fixed with a swap of position. This is correct from the get go.

I knew that the resistance would be higher because of the extra 2 strings but, not 8k higher.

The 4.6k humbucker is louder than this one...

Re: Pickup issue

The DCR of the series combination is 4x of that of the parallel combination, not half.

That's awesome that you're winding your own pickups. How are you going about counting the number of turns?

Re: Pickup issue

i have zero experience with 8 string pups but have wound plenty of six string ones. how different is the pattern between the two? are you hand guiding the wire? do you use a tensioner or is it just by feel?

Hand-guided winding and best feel tension. Each coil had the same amount of wire on it, and each coil read 14.4k on the meter.

Re: Pickup issue

theres a lot of variables when hand guiding without a tensioner, not a bad thing but the results may not always be as you expected. is the charge on the magnets the same? do you use a longer magnet on an 8 string pup?

I use a long bar magnet for 8s and custom sized for anything above 9.
