Pickup List

Imperfect

Is there a list somewhere that shows what pickups are wound the same so that when switching magnets you know what you are converting to? If not, that would be a great thing to have for reference.

Re: Pickup List

From Seynour Duncan, the only official line is the Custom line.
Ceramic = Custom
A2 = Custom Custom
A5 = C5

Unofficially, and confirmed on this forum, the Jazz and Alnico II Pro are also related:
A5 = Jazz
A2 = A2P

There are others that are rumored to be mag swaps and pole piece changes, but you won't see the company confirming it. And that's OK. All that information can be considered a trade secret, and an essential part of the Seymour Duncan company core business.

If you are an experimenter, it just adds to the fun if you can only speculate what parts and pieces combine to form each pickup, IMO. :)

Re: Pickup List

All I know is what PFD said. There may be others, and I'd assume there are, but it is fun to experiment on my own.

Re: Pickup List

The JB and Distortion are rumoured to be the same wind, but with a different magnet. Others say they're similar, but not exactly the same. Same goes for the Invader bridge and JB. The Full Shred bridge is rumoured to be a Custom 5 with hex screws, while the Full Shred neck is a Jazz with the same features.

If you do a bit of searching on the forum, the JB / Distortion rumor is debunked. A member swapped an A5 into his Distortion and it sounded nothing like his JB. I can't comment on the Invader since I've never heard it with conventional poles. I also have the same suspicions about the Full Shred, Custom 5, and Jazz, but don't really want to attempt converting between them. On a final note I have an A2P I never use that will soon become a Jazz.

Re: Pickup List

I think that the JB and Distortion have similar, winds, but not identical. I put a double thick ceramic in my JB and it doesn't sound exactly like a Distortion. It has a deeper tighter bottom and more sizzle on top, but the mid spike is still there. I wonder how the Distortion sounds with an A5?

Re: Pickup List

My understanding is that the Invader Bridge is a JB wind using two slug bobbins, the giant hex cap screws, and multiple ceramic magnets.
The neck Invader is the Jazz wind with two slug bobbins, giant hex cap screws, and a ceramic magnet.
Additionally, the Stag Mag is a JB wind with two slug bobbins and staggered Alnico 2 rod magnets (and four wooden spacers underneath the bobbins).
Someone else pointed out that the Full Shred set is essentially a Jazz Neck and a Custom 5 Bridge with all screw bobbins and hex screws.

A Full Shred set is essentially a Jazz Neck and a Custom 5 Bridge with all screw bobbins and hex screws.
The voicing of the coils is different in both cases. that's something that simply comparing DC readings will never tell.

HTH,

Re: Pickup List

I've swapped an Alnico 5 in the Distortion Trembucker and it did not sound quite like my JB trembucker, but then again, the sample is too small to know for sure. I've always thought the sound of the Distortion has A LOT in common with the JB even in stock form, though.

AFAIK, the Black Winter is within the same family of winds as the JB, Distortion, and Invader.
