Pickup Magnet question...

This may be a dumb question but here it is...

Are all pickup magnets the same? For example: Is a Gibson A5 pickup magnet different from a Seymour Duncan A5 magnet in anyway? Are both these magnets the same quality? Thanks!

Re: Pickup Magnet question...

I can't comment on specific brands but I can say: Not all magnets are created equal.

Re: Pickup Magnet question...

This can not argued on a save ground, so basic line: there is a guy (mofinco) at the lespaulforum who is testing every single magnet by ear before it goes into the production of the Dr. V pickup of Wolfetone. This guys says you can not measure or tell by anything else how a specific magnet sounds (even from the same production batch) - you have to give it a try to be sure.

Re: Pickup Magnet question...

The magnets of the same grade may be the same, but the pickup builders can charge them differently (fully chared or degaussed).

Re: Pickup Magnet question...

Pretty much all of them are made in China now due to environmental laws.

I can't say whether this or that 'brand' of Alnico will hold a charge better or worse, but in my experience using a bunch of them from different makers, there doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference to me.

That mofinco finds a bunch of them with different gauss readings just means that some are not as fully charged as others. They may all have been fully charged out of the factory but between there and getting into your pickup, they may have been exposed to other magnetic fields, which can weaken them and also cause a bar magnet to be unevenly charged along its length.

But none of this is really a problem because Alnico magnets are easily recharged. A couple of neodymium disk mags in a steel vice with opposite poles facing each other = instant magnet recharger. Alnico 8 bar magnet = instant partial degausser/weakener.
