pickup maintenance

I just put SD single coils in my Tele - love the sound.

My question is: is there anything I have to worry about in terms of PU maintenance? Will contact with other magnets demagnetize them or degrade the tone?

Re: pickup maintenance

Well, I can tell you, from experience, not to spill beer on them...

Re: pickup maintenance

Also keep the pickups away from strong electromagnetic fields. That means not laying your guitar on top of an amp, or against the speakers.

I would definitely not put other magnets on the pickups, but I doubt that the magnets being nearby, as when you rest your guitar on your amp, will bother them. I'd say keep them away from extreme heat (like the type that would normally kill you), don't beat them with sledgehammers, and don't stick other magnets on them. That and the other basic electronic principles like don't pour water in the guitar, don't pour strong solvents like rubbing alcohol or naptha in the guitar (probably not good for the rosin and/or any other adhesives in the guitar), use a hard case to protect the instrument, etc.

I always wanted to know if rusted pole pieces did something to the tone and how to clean them...

Everything does something to the tone. Still, I don't know. Me personally, without doing the research as how to properly clean Alnico material or whatever, I'd grab a wire brush (or stiff plastic brush preferably) and WD-40.

Re: pickup maintenance

The pickup isn't really "damaged" if it's exposed to other magnetic fields because it's really easy to recharge the magnets. Alnico can sometimes corrode slightly but it still works just fine.

Otherwise, there is no maintenance for pickups or all those 40-50-60-year old pickups wouldn't work and they wouldn't be in such demand. If you don't physically damage the pickup (coil especially), the durn thing should out-live you.

WD-40 is good on rust. An old stiff tooth brush may be good also.

I would avoid a metal bristled brush because, any metal that comes off of it will be impossible to 100% get off the pickups.

Yeah I probably should've said "don't use a metal brush".
