Pickup mount wing repair help please...

The the metal wing on a pickup where the screw screws in called "Mounting Wing"? Not sure if that's correct, but mine is broke...right where it meets the base. Any threads or "How-to DOs" on here that anyone knows of? Thanks.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

mounting tab.

you could solder on a new one if you feel like it, from a donor baseplate.

alternatively, you could just get a new baseplate and transplant the rest of the pickup assembly.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

What does the old one look like? Might be able to re-use it using some 'redneck' engineering. Reinforce it with a piece of brass sheet from the hobby store.

Or as CTN said, new baseplates are available.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

hmmm...sure hate to replace it, it's a 1977 Super 70 with serial number. May just have to though. thanks

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

Solder won't hold but if you don't mind drilling the base plate you can screw on a bent piece of metal with a small enough screw/bolt. If you don't mind the look that is

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

sure solder will work, but you need to re-enforce the point with additional metal. sheet brass should work. It won't look nice, but should work.

If you post a picture of the break, maybe somebody experienced will suggest the right course of action... specially if the baseplate is long-legged.

HTH,

ah.

that's a pain to fix. I would just get a new baseplate.

If you're worried about the pickup no longer being original, get a small piece of nickel silver, bent to a right angle, clamp it to the broken off leg. clamp the two so that the broken leg is as tight up against where it broke off as possible, with the support piece bracing it against the baseplate. solder it all together.

I'd take the magnet out though, just to make sure that the heat doesn't mess with it (and especially if you're using a soldering gun instead of an iron)

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

^Exactly. Sheet brass from the hobby store should also work and probably would be a lot easier to get.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

structurally yes, it'd work, but brass creates eddy currents and will change the sound of the pickup, very slightly. A small piece just to support the leg probably won't do a whole lot, but it might.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

Exactly - Just enough of a of a piece to get solder to stick to. Was thinking a could of pieces of .005" (on inside and outside) would be more than sufficient. Just go down the leg and maybe 1/16" on the main baseplate.

I actually think a couple of short pieces of heavy bent copper wire soldered to the back side would also work, but that might look like redneck engineering.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

If it was my problem, I would remove the baseplate before doing the repair, trying to keep the bobbins, magnet, and spacer together as a "lump" (i.e. not breaking the wax seals holding it all together).

As for the repair, I would first construct a solid jig that holds the leg and the baseplate solidly in the right position, while sitting in such a way that allowed me to work on it. This can be as simple as chiseling or sawing a shelf into a small piece of pine, and taping down the plate (though clamps would be better). I would try to remove as much wax as possible in the area of the repair, using heat first, and then some form of oil-cutting chemical to finish. Then I would use 800 grit (or thereabout) sandpaper on the entire repair area, then lightly tin the sanded area with solder. Then, using the jig, I would just lightly solder the leg on; not create a big-ol' bead of solder, but simply fill in the cracks so it at least sticks temporarily. Then I would reinforce the joint with a piece of metal shim stock the same thickness as the leg, bent at a 90 degree angle. I'd clamp it in place on the baseplate, solder it to the baseplate, then let it cool. Then, I would clamp the other part of the brace to the leg, solder it to the leg, and let it cool. Then I would remove the baseplate from the jig and solder the outside of the leg and let it dry. Then I would reassemble the pickup and test it, finally soldering the cover back on while it is firmly clamped and the entire pickup has been heated up with a heat gun. Release the clamp only after the pickup has cooled off from the heat gun for about 10 or 15 minutes (allowing the wax to harden fully). I'd then clean the entire repair area, and reinforce everything with epoxy/JB weld (being neat in the application, but still using plenty of the stuff). The soldered-on brace holds the thing together. However, a solder joint, being made of soft metal, is not mechanically strong. The epoxy protects the repaired area from damage in the future due to possible impact or flexing, as well as helping to hold things together in addition to the solder.

Re: Pickup mount wing repair help please...

I'm really inspired by everyone's comments...thank you all! Instead of soldering metal and risking heating up wax or removing the baseplate, would using plastic or wood and crazy glue work ok? I know metal to metal doesn't do well with crazy glue, but Plastic and wood are both great with crazy glue. A rough version would be to make a wood L-Clamp looking device out of a popsicle stick, crazy gluing it to both the base and the broken piece. A refined version would be to use one piece that has been cut to form the "L" ...has anyone ever done this to success or failure? Just curious before I begin this endeavor. Shipping it out for a 20.00 replacement is probably the way to go, as I don't want to put heat to the pickup and risk melting wax or worse.

If you don't want to solder take a piece of metal and scab it on with some JB weld or similar metal epoxy. Scuff up where you are going to expoxy with a bit of sandpaper, expoy, clamp, done.

Side view picture included. Between the red circles is where you would epoxy. Blue piece is your metal scab.

This is what I had in mind too.
