Pickup Physics ???????????????

Hey all,

I am curious to know if any of you know about the physics of Humbuckers, eg: Size of the ceramic/Almico magnet, compsition affected the type of pole pieces (thickness or length), plus the shape and wire gauge of the coil

....how the shape an type of magnetic field is affected as it passes through the coils...... you know the real Meat and potatoes of humbuckers.

What affects what, and what sound, beyond the regular info we all know about ceramic vs alnico blah blah blah........

Maybe then we might know more about what we want???? :banghead:

I understand and encourage your curiosity, but...

with the GREAT number of people who have found truly awesome tone without knowing any physics involved in pickups, I'm willing to say that there's a much better way to know more about what we want...

keep trying pickups and asking people what worked for them... oh and... play loud!

Not to get you down, but for me this thread is like asking "what are the physics that govern breasts?". You don't need to know any physics to know what kind of jugs you like!

...Yeah but, there are those like me who want to know more, 'cause U have tried HEAPS of pickups and its note getting me anywhere????? :banghead: :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

Can you read German?

Helmut Lemme's book has a lot of good stuff (next to lots of nonsense but the good stuff is there).

Folks around here are more into mojo than science. Anytime I post anything very sciencey, I get shouted down. I think it is because some guitar players can't change there own strings and probably have trouble tying their shoes. ;)

Might have something to do with most of us being musicians and few of us being engineers or physical scientists. You'll have that.

I think sometimes, in order to get the sound you want to come out of that amp, you've just got to believe the gear is on your side. Once you've convinced yourself of that -- however that happens -- you do the rest of the work yourself.

Re: Pickup Physics ???????????????

The problem with the scientist approach using people (notably Lemme) is that they identify a couple physical things that are responsible and then they are satisfied. They attribute everything they hear to whatever the heck they had identified as physical factors. Subsequently they dismiss everything else that (to the musicians) obviously changes sound as "voodoo".
