Pickup query Gibson Explorer

I have a query regarding pickup choice for a 1980 Gibson Explorer E2. I currently have a Custom Custom SH11 in the neck posn. and play classic rock (AC/DC early UFO style). The sound is great lower down the neck and sounds full and sweet but past the 12th fret the sound gets just too bright and slightly thin sounding for lead work for my taste. I need more warmth. There is too much AH and not enough OOH if you know what I mean. I have looked with great interest at the custom shop evh 78 pickup but need some advice. I'm hoping that there have been similar queries from other Explorer players and maybe someone can help me out. My gear is Peavey 5150 amp, 4x12 cab G12 75w speakers.

Have you heard the C5 yet? I willing to bet that may be what you're looking for. For something warmer than a C5, try a '59...

You have a CC in the neck and it gets too thin?

I think what you might want is a APH2 (Alnico II Pro). I have a bridge one and it's pretty smooth, I image the neck version does what you want. Not a high-gain pickup. But it is smooth.
