Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

I really liked the JB in my SL2H when I had it. It was a naturally thick-toned guitar and the JB gave it a nice mid punch while rolling off the highs slightly so things didn't get too fizzy. It was a great combination for me. YMMV.

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

Back in my day we didn't have all these fancy new-fangled pickups. The JB was the only pickup in stores, and we had to use it for everything -- including MRIs. Okay, there might have been a few more models available. But we were all too busy watching Star Wars over and over to notice. In local movie theaters, no less, which all still had red velvet seat cushions and a pipe organ that the lady from the Methodist church would play before the first reel started.

Didn't that guitar come with a JB ?!?!?!?

The JB isn't good enough for the young kids of today. They've got to get their surf and big-band sounds just right, you know.

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

DiM Norton,perhaps?

Yes, it's exactly what he's describing, including the hair metal. Against a JB in the same strat of mine, the JB, which is also a great pup, was less gnarly, less biting, less tight in the bass, although it's great for singing leads. But the Norton's leads are great too, just different; more biting and chewey.

And the Norton can do modern tones well too imo. It's also not too weak and not too hot. So far it's my favortite all around pup. The JB landed in my parker, where it sounds great.

:)

I haven't put the Norton in a guitar that it "didn't" work well with!!!
:headbang:

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

Well, didn't Reb Beach himself use the Norton for the Dokken job?

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

Thanks for all your help. I´m not a DiMarzio guy but I looked at their website for the Norton and theoretically, it´s spot on what I´m looking for. Therefore I will try one. Just one thing: What do you guys think of the Air Zone pickup, if we are speaking of DiMarzios?

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

I'm starting to get a faint whiff of cork here. Some people are never happy with any pickup, but great players always managed to overcome somehow in the past. I definitely wouldn't recommend going through an arsenal of pickups without tweaking other things first. There are a lot of choices out there now, but no reason to think you can't sleep at night until you have tried them all.......

I contacted Seymour Duncan to see what they think is right for me and my guitar. Keith Merrow responded and said the Alternativ 8 would be exactly what I was looking for. So that´s what I will try first. I will report back, thanks so far to everyone! Great Forum!

Imo the alt 8 is not going to get you as close as the norton will. I had the alt 8 for a year, and I'm the one who just sold it in the trading post. It's a big ever where pup w/o the bite and clarity you mentioned. It's not as a versatile as the norton, especially with how the norton can change so much with the volume rolled back a bit, which is a huge plus for rythm playing.

The alt 8 is a cool pup and has it's place, but I could only live with it with an A5 mag, which was a huge improvement imo. I could've lived with it longer that way had I not tried a JB, which sounded better to me.

Sorry, but I really think you'd be happier with a Norton.

gvis, thanks for your input, I really appreciate it! Of course Keith can´t recommend anything that is not Seymour Duncan. As I said, I looked on DiMarzios website and theoretically, the Norton is exactly what I´m looking for. So I will try both, the TB-15 and the Norton!

No prob. With their return policies, sure, might as well as try them both. Hope one of them works out for you. It'd be interesting to know what you think of each of them.

Yeah, again another vote for the Custom 8. It has the heat of the Custom, but is more warm and vocal. I run them in a BUNCH of guitars and love them. Including one of my Charvels. The other Charvel has a 59/Custom hybrid and thats also a great pickup! I have an ALT8 in one of my guitars and its also a great pickup. Its more balls to the wall than the C8 or hybrid. Ill try to get it out one day soon and give you a more direct comparison as I havnt played that guitar much lately. Its a cool pickup, just more in your face.

Re: Pickup recommendation fpr Jackson Soloist

BloodRose, I would try a Custom 8 too, I heard a lot of good things about it. But it´s a self-built pickup and I don´t want to swap magnets right now. Furthermore, I have only one main sound which is "In your Face!". Therefore the Alternativ 8 would be perfect from you are saying about it.
