Pickup Recommendation - Metal - Basswood trem with maple neck/rosewood fretboard.

Re: Pickup Recommendation - Metal - Basswood trem with maple neck/rosewood fretboard.

I listened to a bunch of comparison videos, the blackouts sound thicker than emg 81's, but the distortions sound fuller than the blackouts...... so I'm not sure if I should bother trying them or just switch.

i have a full shred set in my rg921 and a dactivator/ air norton s set in my rg3xxv.

full shred set does classic rock to metal better than the other set.

dactivator is actually a pretty good pickup, especially for metal. it is a bit stiff and sterile sounding to do much else credibly though. with it being a sub 10k pickup, i would love to try it with an a5 or a8.

i love the air norton s. it sounds great in series and very single coil like in parallel. the feel is there too. one can never accuse it of being bright though. articulate? yes

Well to be fair the problem with most yputube clips is that at best they're done with guitars that have the same woods, most of times don't even that, to do a true comparison the guitar used should be the same, that's why i recomend you to check ola englund's seymour duncan pickup shoutout, an also keith merrow's dyncan pickup shotout, ola's vid is a couple years old and he uses like 3 diferent guitars through the video as he also evaluates some 8 string pickups, keith's vid is more updated as he uses some of the latest released duncans, and he uses only one guitar, on ola's vid the character and texture of some pickups jumps and gets more noticeable due to the amp and settings that ola uses

That is true. I listened to the Keith Merrow video about 10 times by now with different headphones to see. A lot of the other videos are trash but there are a few that use the same guitar. A lot of ola's were done on 7 string guitars too though, I know they can sound different than the 6 string versions sometimes.

More of a difference in the room 4sure. Blackouts are both beefier and hotter IMO. Would depend on the specific guitar for me.

how does the RG sounds acoustically?, it is bright, dark, middy, also how much low end it has, huge gazillions of low end, big booty bottom, balanced lows or anemic? yup i know the guitar is basswood but that ain't enough, if woodtype was enough i would have choose something like a distortion instead of the dimebucker that currently provides brutality to my V

so, unplug a while, strum, play your normal riffs and describe to me the tone you hear from your RG

It's basswood with a maple wizard neck and a trem. It sounds thin. That's the best way I can describe it unplugged. Not a lot of low end at all. I don't know if I'd call it trebly though. Maybe balanced with no bass. Lol. The Duncan Distortion that's in there sounds good with the bass maxed out on my HT5r. I don't play the mesa much since I'm in a second floor apt.

well, if it is balanced with not much bass then look at the parallel axis distortion, is a very interesting pickup that the forum bros describe as fusing the best of the jb family without any of the bads (bottom of invader without chance of mush, grind and attack of the distortion without potential harshness, jb singing high end without annoying mid honk)

So the blackouts are pretty epic. I put them in the Hellraiser Hybrid and it stomps my RG like a whiny baby for pretty much everything I try to A/B. The Distortion had more low end than the EMG 57, but I liked the 57's growl better. EDX you think the patb could work in the RG? How about the PATB2?

Agree on this description of the PATB2.

I would've never bought the JB to add to a guitar, although it came in one of my Charvels, and is good enough to stay. But there is that honk.... :guilty:

The PATB2 has an insanely smooth, yet sizzling hot lead tone/high end. It makes me feel racy and confident because I know that I can nail every note loud and clear. It does seem to be slightly different sounding from the standard Distortion I use in another guitar, although that one admittedly has a different construction. The PATB2 has very ample low end as well. It can actually be too wooly for me Boogie if I don't turn the bass down compared to some of my other guitars! That helps with Marshalls and the like, however. And the icing on the cake is that is looks super cool and is a conversation starter.

I kind of want more growl than the Distortion has now, but it's not really necessary. There is some kind of nasally quality in it that I can't seem to get rid of. Regardless of the Bridge or neck pickup being used it's just there. It's not there at all with the Blackouts. Though I do wish the BO neck had a bit more articulation for solo stuff.

well SH-6 Duncan Distortion + more low end - (honky or nasal sound) = PATB 2 Distortion

Re: Pickup Recommendation - Metal - Basswood trem with maple neck/rosewood fretboard.

I once put a custom 8 in a basswood rg and it was pretty killer. Definitely boosted the mids and lows compared to the dimebucker that was in it. And I thought the dimebucker was as good as it was going to get with that guitar.
