Pickup ring size ibanez/jackson matters ?

A friend of mine (no really) installed a PA-TB2 in my ibanez s320. He left the original pickup ring installed which barely fits the new pickup, meaning the pickup is completely stuck in the ring (windings touching sides of the ring). I noticed on the forum these pickups come with their own rings, so I am completely in the dark whether swapping out the ring will improve sound as I found the box back which still contains the provided larger ring. At the moment the guitar sounds a lot less defined than my jackson sl-1 which still has the stock TB-4 in it and it also gives tons of feedback, requiring agressive noise gate settings which hurts sustain.

Will changing the ring solve the feedback/bassy sound or is it just the thin magohany body which "causes" this ? Should I maybe stick the PA-TB2 in the soloist as it has a brighter/denser block of wood and stick the TB-4 in the ibanez. I guess I could just try it, but I'd like some feedback on this first as I don't exactly have soldering gear lying about.

My JB trembucker would not fit the picukup mounting ring in my SA120 so i filled the pickup ring a little. The Pickup ring that came with the Trembucker was black and the orginal ring on the Ibby was chrome. I did not want remove the chrome 'coloured 'ring. I would recommend either using the ring that came with pickup or file the stock ring to fit the PA- TB2 . Dont keep it stuck half way. I would be concerned about damaging the pickup that way. Plus Ima very sure the pickup is very far from the strings in this scenario.

How would the pickup ring change the sound of the pickup?

Sounds like you might have wiring issues with all the noise.

Once you get the wiring and pickup ring issues solved, then decide if that pickup is not right for that guitar.

Well since the ring is actually just a bit too small the pickup is basically stuck transferring all vibrations of the body into the magnetic field of the strings. Usually pickups tend to be able to move just a bit as they do on all my other guitars. But I'm not really sure if this is affecting things in any way sound-wise.

when putting a TB-5 and subsequently a TB-6 in my Ibanez, SAS32ex, I had to use the SD rings cuz the wider leg spacing wasn't fitting very well with the Ibanez rings.

Changing the rings is highly unlikely to to change the sound of the pickup, but it will fit better.

Re: Pickup ring size ibanez/jackson matters ?

If it's stuck in there really low it's not gonna sound right, PATB's are supposed to be mounted fairly close to the strings. The feedback issue is probably not related, but that pickup shouldn't be any more prone to it than the JB, I'm guessing you have another issue, wiring or something.

Re: Pickup ring size ibanez/jackson matters ?

You need to change that ring and get the pickup closer. I know what you are talking about when saying it is stuck I had the same issue. But regarding the feedback ext you seem to have a wiring issue the PATB should sound Big in that guitar.
