Pickup selection for LP please!!

Hi all

It's an oldie but a goodie - what pickups do I want?!

Here's the guitar: Gibson Les Paul Studio with gold pickup covers.

Here's the mod: I'm going to use master volume and master tone and the two remaing pots will be spin-a-split to coil split each pickup.

Here's the sound I'm looking for: Something that for solos will do really dirty, but also more classic rock (so somewhere between some of Graham Coxon's heavier stuff and some Darkness style solos and Brian May), but that will be good for chugging rhythms as well as more punk type tones. Then ideally pups that when split sound a bit more interesting than a standard coil split - maybe have a bit of bite at the bridge, and smooth like a strat at the neck.

Okay, this is probably a wild dream, but that's the basic of what I'm looking for - if it can't be done then tell me... I'm big enough to take it!

Thanks

James

Re: Pickup selection for LP please!!

I have a LP with pullup tone pots for splitting, and I love the combinations I can get with the Custom / Jazz bridge in neck position. The Jazz Bridge is just like the neck version, only it's got a tiny bit more guts....the perfect bridge between the Jazz and 59n. Some of us love it in the neck, and it splits really well.....really stratty. The Custom or Custom 5 will both sound great in your guitar.

Yes'r!! Is it just you, Stevo, and myself GJ? When will they come around?;):)

Re: Pickup selection for LP please!!

Thanks a lot for the input.

I've currently got a PG neck in my Flying V with a Duncan Custom at the bridge, so in the interests of variety I'm gonna avoid those 2 (though they're great pickups).

So you're suggesting maybe a Jazz bridge pickup but in the neck position? I guess that's gonna have more clarity than a 59 at the neck?

Okay, so how would a Custom or Custom 5 compare to the Duncan Custom I have in my Flying V?

Cheers

Re: Pickup selection for LP please!!

I'm not too experienced with this genre set, but using the Tone Wizard in classic rock and heavy rock / metal genres:

Classic Rock
Neck: Jazz / '59
Bridge: JB / Custom 5

Heavy Rock / Metal
Neck: '59 / Jazz
Bridge: JB / Custom

Based on what you want, I would recommend the '59 / JB. However, I do not have experience with mahogany body guitars (the closest thing, my ESP, has a Jazz/JB combo and it sounds nice and is very versatile), and I've never tried the Custom or Custom 5. The Hot Rodded combo is a good way to get the Jazz and JB at $120 (rather than buying separate for $70-ish each), so it's an option, and that combo does sound very nice when split (I've got mine wired up with push/pulls).

The '59 would sound more warm than the Jazz (I have experience with both those).
