Pickup Size / Pot Resistance

Couple questions. I've got a JB and a Demon. Both are the size for Les Paul type style. Not the wider versions for a Floyd Rose.

Does this really cause much of an issue to stick one of these in a floyd guitar? Does it really effect sound much?

I know Eddie had this issue 25+ years ago and reason pup is slanted in the frankenstein....but I'm lazy and wondering if the difference is major...

Also, I'm putting a demon in a kramer plywood body....1-3 way switch and one volume control, no tone.......which would be best 250k or 500k? I'm beginning to think it's a matter of preference, but want to see what you all think.

Thanks!

Re: Pickup Size / Pot Resistance

I have an SH-1 in the bridge of my RG, my poles do not line up towards the lower strings (E and A, especially), and it still sounds as great as I had hoped. It doesn't make a HUGE difference, but if you are really trying to dial in your tone, having the adjustable poles lined up with the appropriate strings will be helpful.

welcome to the forum william!

i wouldnt worry about the spacing that much, in most cases there is very little difference

typically i prefer 500k pots in all humbucker guitars but if im mixing single coils and buckers ill start off with 250k and see how that sounds. there is no rules and different people will prefer different things

Re: Pickup Size / Pot Resistance

Thanks fellas, this all makes sense. I think I'll start with the 250k since I am mixing pups.

As for the spacing agreed, I'm not going to worry about it making that big of a difference.

Re: Pickup Size / Pot Resistance

Some people will tell you the spacing makes a huge difference. I've had it make a difference in some guitars, and not in others. Just try what you have, and if the Es sound bad, you probably need the tremspaced version.

With the pot thing, 500k will sound brighter than 250k.

Re: Pickup Size / Pot Resistance

Pole piece spacing will not make much difference (so long as the string isn't TOO far from the polepiece). The pickup's magnetic flux is directed toward the vibration of the string and it does not discriminate whether that direction be straight up or at a slight angle.

As mentioned above, most 'buckers use 500k pots and single coils use 250k pots. But I have a very bright Les Paul that I recently installed a 250k volume pot in to tame some of the highs...worked like a charm.

I'll have to give the pup a try with spacing as is. Good suggestion with the E's, I'll give keep that in mind. I'm still waivering on which pot. Know that I think a little more, maybe the 500k is what I should try first. If it's too bright, I know which way to go. Plus I have a new 500k sitting around, so I'll probably try first.

Thanks for all suggestions, I'll let you all know how it goes.

With a 'bucker, I'd definitely try the 500k pot first. That's the standard. I only deviate in excessively bright or dark sounding guitars.
