I recently bought a 7 string Ibanez RG7421, it has mahogany body with walnut finish, a very "essential" 7-string. I play heavy music but I am not a shredder, in fact, the band I am playing now borders on doom sometimes.
I am interested in a raw sound with big output/distortion, a good bass response, without sacrificing the important mid-frequencies that help in a mix. Quantums are not that bad to me, but I find them lacking in output/distortion.
For what I've seen, many popular pickup sets (duncan/dimarzios) cost 2/3 of the guitar itself. What are your suggestions for pickups that will do a consistent difference with the quantums and can be found on a decent price (also used)?
Better if they are not active or non-RG suited, I would not like to route the guitar and I don't think I need active ones.
I was looking at used dimarzio x2n 7, or entwistle darkstar 7, the latter are dead cheap but do not convince me so much, any experiences with them?
My amp is a katana head with a tubemeister 18 2x12 cab with celestion v30s and I don't want to change that
