Pickup suggestion for Dean Caddy - SH5 (Custom) today

I'm on the search for the ideal pup for my Dean Cadillac guitar. For reference this is a maple capped mahogany guitar with set neck and rosewood fretboard - think Les Paul.

I've tried the SH6 (Distortion) which is a little too bright and shrill for this guitar (yet works well in a PRS SE that I own), and today I have a SH5 (Custom) installed - which is better, but it has a slight twang or "honk" ... almost like there is a very slight WAH effect going on - is this perhaps the PAF sound or just the sound I get when used in this guitar? I've used this pup before in a cheaper basswood guitar and loved the tone - but something is still desirable in the tone for the Caddy. I want something a little more balanced or sweet sounding. I do play in dropC tuning, and play very percussively and lots of rhythm and riffs (some leads, but only for solos - chugging throughout the rest of the song).

Playing styles and desired tones are similar to Godsmack / Disturbed, but with the ability to get on the edge of Trivium / Megadeth thrash sounds. I would classify the need as Hard Rock first then Metal.

I hate to keep buying pups and trying different things - hoping someone may have some feedback to steer me in a direction. I LOVED the tone from a JB (SH4) I had in a Schecter guitar (that I no longer own) ... but it got muddy down at dropC - not sure of that was the guitar or the pup - but I liked the balance of the JB at standard tunings in that guitar. What can give me that balanced / sweet sound in dropC on this Les Paul-esque guitar?

If the SH-5 Custom is almost right, consider a Custom Custom. Alternatively, if you feel brave, swap out the ceramic magnet for an Alnico.
