Pickup Suggestion For My Gibson SG?

Re: Pickup Suggestion For My Gibson SG?

I'm fiddling with my SG's bridge pickup, too. It sounds great in the neck but in the bridge it doesn't have enough weight to e.g. drive the Duncan Custom I put in. PAFs sound nice in there but my Pauls are better for that.

My next tries will be:
- JB with A2
- SD 78

I'd really be interested in how the 78 works out. I find that the SG neck sounds great and I suspect that it'd be hard to mess up. The bridge on the other hand, is a tough nut to crack. Right now I have a Phat Cat with a 4 and degaussed 5. This sounds great. As for buckers, the 498 and Custom type stuff is great, except it does leave a bit to be desired in the top end. The lower powered stuff I tried was too clangy. The only bucker I can think that may work would be the A2Pro. But I'd love to hear about some others.

+1. SG bridge PU's can be a challenge, as that thin body means they don't have the warmth & sustain of an LP. It can take a little extra effort to get them fuller sounding. I've been doing it lately with A4, A8, & A6 magnets.

Custom SH-5 ! I put one in my SG Standard, and it kicks ASS now ! Yeah, I also had to narrow my options, as pickups without cover's look like **** in these SG's w/o mounting rings !

Re: Pickup Suggestion For My Gibson SG?

One (possibly stupid) question: Can the nickel covers on the stock PU's be removed and put on the Duncans?

Actually, it is a good question, and the answer is no. Gibson and Duncan humbuckers have different pole spacings, so the holes on the covers do not line up correctly.

If the difference is small you can use a 1/4" drill to open the holes just a bit. But there more sizes of PU covers than there ought to be!

Re: Pickup Suggestion For My Gibson SG?

Well, I posted this question on a few forums and got many different answers (Motor City, Lollars, Gibson's, SD, DiMarzio, etc..Off the counter and custom..)..I finally decided on going all the way and get a set of custom, handwound PU's...

I contacted Jim at WCR Pickups late last night (at 1:30 am, on an early Monday morning) and he responded almost immediately! Told him what I needed and what styles i'm playing and he highly suggested the "American Steele" set (its a Crossroads neck with a Godwood bridge) along with a pre-wired kit. I also ordered a set of polished nickel covers for them..

I should receive them early next week..I'll let you know how they work out for me..Thanks to everybody that helped me through the PU search process!
