S2 McCarty 594, doublecut. I got it to have a PRS S2 with a thick neck. Stock one is definitely old school - vintagey clang, low output, touch sensitive, all things that I get from other guitars. So I'd like to it sound more Explorer/Flying V/498T and less vintage LP/Seth Lover. More radio-friendly 2000s hard rock/metal and less 60s/70s blues. Coheed and Cambria, Polyphia, Metallica, Intervals, Bullet for my Valentine, Funeral for a Friend, My Chemical Romance. The goal is tight and articulate and huge into a hot amp (with easy pinch harmonics), then full and lush and chimey into a clean amp with lots of headroom. The guitar itself has loads of low end and low mid energy, with even and clear highs. Amplified this translates into turning the bass and mids all the way down, for the most part. So a new pickup should either lean into the low mid energy (Super Distortion) or aim to curtail it (85/15) .
What pickups do y'all suggest? Here are some of my rambling thoughts, as is my way.
Duncan Custom. Seems like it'd do the trick.
BKP Nailbomb. Claudio from Coheed uses it. Love the sound. Hate the price.
DMZ Super Distortion. A classic. Read lots about it, never tried it.
Gibson Dirty Fingers. Never played it, used it in a lot of recordings I like.
Gibson 498t. Dig it in my LP Studio for articulate and huge and pleasant with distortion but still chimey with cleans.
PRS 85/15s. This set is in my PRS SE Custom. Eliminates all the low mid mud that the SE Custom has acoustically, and the guitar absolutely screams. Would take this sound in the S2 McCarty in a heartbeat. But no guarantee it'll be the same sound in this guitar.
Some other PRS or Gibson pickup.
