First post - have been a SD fan since the 80s, and almost all my guitars have at least one SD pickup.
I recently purchased the Gibby Les Paul Axcess model with Floyd Rose trem. I grew up in the late 70s on Les Pauls, then went to Jacksons and Kramers in the 80s, back to LPs in the 90s for my main axe, so this kinda' seemed liked a little of the best of both worlds. I loved the way the guitar felt and played from note one, but it seemed a bit bright. On stage the Burstbuckers also seemed to want to feedback at high gain settings. I love the way my 2008 Slash (not that huge of a fan - just really dug the guitar) LP sounds, so I switched out the BBs for a pair of Alnico II Pros. This was an improvement, but still a little bright for my taste, and still a little short on the chunky LP thing. This is to be perhaps somewhat expected, as the Axcess has a bit of a thinner body than a normal Standard, and the Floyd, of course. The Slash model also has a huge, fat neck.
This is my first mahogany/maple/Floyd guitar, so I have no personal experience for comparison. I had a Fernandes Ravelle Limited for awhile with a Custom 5 that sounded killer - but I sold it because I could not get used to the wide, flat fretboard.
Any suggestions for beefing the Axcess up before I break out the soldering iron again? I've Googled and haven't found many mod suggestions. I like medium/ hi-gain pups (but open to anything) and use a Marshall JCM 800 reissue with a Digitech RP1000 for my main amplification. Love 70s classic rock and 80s metal.
THANKS!
