Pickup Suggestion Please ?

I just put together an old Fender '72 Deluxe. I bought a Warmouth pick guard that's cut out for two regular humbuckers. I put in a set of "Phat Cats" and it sounds very nice. I'd like to do this again only this time put a third single coil in the middle position (there's a ton of room there) and use a Strat 5-way switch so that I can get the nice 1-2 and 2-3 combinations. Any suggestions on a pickup to go in there. How about a third "Phat Cat" and if so, do I use a neck or a bridge pickup. I'm in a situation where the more tone possibilities the better. I play blues and classic rock but I have a few other guitars and have my bases covered so this is strictly a guitar that I'm experimenting with. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Up Front

I think I'd go for a third Phat Cat. Right now, do you have humcancelling when your two pickups are combined? You should if one is a neck model and the other a bridge model.

If you go with a bridge Phat Cat for the middle, it won't be humcancelling when you combine it with your existing bridge pickup - but that's still what I'd put in there.

Maybe you could special order a RW/RP bridge pickup.

I had a single P90 1959 or 60 Les Paul Jr. that I put a middle P90 in back in the early 70's. No neck pickup.

Loved the tone of a bridge P90 and middle P90 combined and in those days pickups were not calibrated or RW/RP. A bridge pickup was the same wind as a neck pickup.

Is this a MIM reissue Telecaster Deluxe or an original piece? If you have an original pair of Fender Wide Range humbuckers, what have you done with the perishers?

It was a '03 MIM Tele Deluxe, and you're welcome to the original pickups for a small fee. I'm 55 and have been playing seriously for over 30 years. This is my first go at these "Wide Range" pickups and I really wasn't impressed at all. But that's just me. :thumbsdow

Re: Pickup Suggestion Please ?

I've just about made up my mind to order another pick guard and put a SSL-2 in the middle with a 5-Way switch, one volume and one tone w/ 250k pots.

Any thoughts ?
