Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

fwiw... I just recently put in a PG set into my Greco LP, and the guitar now instantly sounds like Govt Mule (Haynes has a few other tones on other projects, e.g. ABB)! The tone that comes to mind is the one on the opening chords to the Mule's song "High and Mighty." I was amazed, given I have simple gear: VS Open Road > Pearl Drive > Classic 30 + ext cab with Weber Blue Dog ceramic.

With my other SD pickups (Seths, Antiquity, A2P) my preference is to bring down the bridge tone knob to 5. For the PG set, I have to set it lower - 2.5 to 3. So long as the pot works properly, the added brightness the PG's are known for is not an issue.

The A2P bridge would be a warmer-sounding alternative, with rounded highs which never get ear-piercing. To my ear tho, the tone is more modern, hi-fi sounding, instead of vintage-y....

Hope that helps with your decision.

WOW! You have the tone almost OFF! You should make sure to use 300K pots all around if you like it dark....maybe get fark pickups?
I may end up going with pickups that give a little more girth than Pearly Gates. Maybe some Guitar Force or Rio Grandes.

+1. That's why I use 250K's on my bridge HB's and P-90's (500K's on the neck).

Yea, I have always done it on Gibsons.....but on PRS guitars it is odd...I much prefer the 500K...actually the PRS vol pots are more like 460K.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

Do you guys feel Duncans are as good as boutique pickups?

I saw a demo of a comparison new les Paul with Dimarzio annuversay PAFs a vintage LP with real PAFs. The original sounded better.
So can boutique pickups get me closer to those great old tones?

Then again my buddy has an early 70s LP and his 1990 sounds just about as good at gigs and my 2004 sound similar to his workhorse,

I think a lit of whether one uses 500 k pots or not can depend on the amp.
With my VHT ST head, I find myself cranking the highs to get more cut because the amp is dark. I was told by a boutique winder that 500k volume pots are best in a semi hollow.

I will say the difference minor and in a band mix it can be tough to hear the difference between a 300 or500.

A guitar pickup is a transducer. It can only bring out what is there in the wood and, to some extent, the metal of the hardware.

If you play enough Les Pauls, you will find that they are all slightly different from each other. This is why Lucid, Jolly, Aceman and others feel it necessary to own several of them. I currently own two. (This number could go down as well as up ... but it probably won't!)

I had a 1994 and a 2004. THey were similar but my 2004 was more 3-D and brighter. I kept the 2004. Overall I think the differences are slight.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

I am kind of worried the Pearly Gates will not be as warm or fat as a Gibson 57 Classic Plus and 57 set.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

Hi. I just got myself a practically new Epi Dot a week ago; also a natural fin. with mahogany neck. So I decided to revisit this thread.

papersoul, I'm surprised you're still on the fence about the PG's. As I've expressed in my previous post, I'm pretty ecstatic about how my PG set works in my LP; so I won't be moving them to my Dot any time soon. So for now I can only imagine how much more a semi-hollow's warmth can enhance the PG's inherent sound.

The PG's displaced a pair of Antiquities; so the latter set will be going into the Dot in a month or two when a luthier friend can get down to it. Am justifying the pairing (to myself) this way: the LP with PG's for full-on raunchy, and the Dot with Ants for jazzy, bluesy to crunch...

Would be great to hear about what you finally install in your Dot. Best of luck with it.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

My LPs already had great pickups so they remain stock - Burstbucker Pros and 1989 Gibson The Originals.

My Epi sounds so darn good stock I wasn't sure I was going to replace them but I might try a set of Gibson 57 Classics.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

I decided to get a Duncan PG neck pickup and Wolfetone Marshallhead MKII Alnico II pickup for the bridge.

I am wondering if changing the pots will make much difference? Anyone tried just changing the pots on these? Much change?

No. I keep them stock expect for the PU's, and adding 250K's on the bridge. PU's do more to upgrade the tone than everything else put together.

I thought the stock volume pots were already 300K. I hear some people changing the bridge and TP.

on my sheraton the pots were 500k mini pots stock. i've taken everything out now cos it was hella bright and will probs replace the bridge with 250k pots or just not make a "no load" tone pot this time!

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

Would love to know if anyone has compared these Epi Dots to the Epiphone Elites and Gibson ES-335s. While I think my inexpensive DOT is almost right up there with my other guitars I am not so sure about the neck and feel. My Gibsons play a little faster.

A good friend told me if I want an ES-335, don't settle for an Epiphone.

You know the stock Epi is very warm and full. I just wish I had more clarity for hard rock. I might eventually try the PGb or the 57 Classic Plus and a 500K pot. I thikn the stock volumes are 300K.
Wish I knew for sure what value the stock pots were and what I should go with.

OK...what about if I want maximum clarity and definition while retaining a decent PAF vibe? I am about ready to do this and down to the 59, PG or Dim. 36th Anniversary.

Clarity is Dimarzio territory.

No they're not. That's why so many people on this forum are always swapping different Duncan's for other Duncan's and swapping magnets and pots and generally missing the point. If you want good tone don't buy Duncan, Dimarzio or Gibson pickups. Get WCR, Fralin, Lollar....
