pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

The neck is chunky like you say, but I am a 50s LP neck guy so I like it! By the way, the neck on my 1989 SG Special feels pretty full, not slim at all. Maybe a touch slimmer than my LP. Very solid DOT though! I have the Natural finish!

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

I'm 'King of the Mid-priced Imports' and have a couple Dots. Nice guitars, especially the recent Chinese ones with Grovers and mahogany necks. I'd go with either a pair of '59 or a pair of PG's. To me, '57's are too dark and muddy in the neck. '59's and PG's are much clearer and more articulate (lower the bass side of the '59N if it's a little boomy).

I never replace the bridges, tailpieces, or switches. I do put 250K's on the bridge PU's though. By far the biggest improvement you can make is upgrading PU's, does more than everything else combined. That's where to put your money (that and a hard case).

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

The neck has to be a PGn. Either PG or '59 in bridge.

I am trying to avoid going boutique with these p/ups so hopefully these will work! Which would be brighter, PG or 59?
Would a PGn/59B balance? Do the 59 and PG really have better clarity than the 57 Classics and Classic Plus?

Stay away from Dimarzio?

The PGs should sound great in the Dot and if you want you could wire it with push-pull pots to split the coils, etc.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

59s...but while you are in there, you really might as well upgrade the pots and caps to sprague. They just "work better"....

Thanks.

You guys will not like me for this but I might also investigate a set of Gibson Burstbucker Pros as I like those too.

I might upgrade the pots to CTS, 300K for the bridge though. I might keep the caps ceramic because I never hear a difference in caps. In fact I went through every cap under the sun in my LPs and PRS guitars and in the end just through the stock caps back in and never hear a darn bit of difference.

I would hope if there was an audible difference, PRS would spend the extra few cents for the orange drops over the ceramics in a $2000 guitar, but they don't. I agree with their choice.:1:

The PG and '59 can both sound bright, but the PG has more mids and sounds fuller. The '59 is bright with scooped mids.

With a PG in the neck, the '59b may sound a bit bright, Could help to swap an UOA5 mag in it.

The PG and the '59 have more clarity than the '57s.

I might go PGs! However, the stock pickups are surpising me! Especially the bridge!

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

I agree about the caps. I've never really heard a difference in the type of cap used (definately a difference in the value of the cap, though). Even so, I still use orange drops just because if there IS a difference, I want to be on the "safe side" and they're not very expensive anyway.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

I am afraid the PG bridge will not be warm enough. I don't want harsh and bright. Wish Dimarzio made an Alnico II bridge model. I'd look into that too because their pickups tend to be darker.

Can't stop playing this thing. If you told me this was a Gibson...I'd believe.

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

Hi guys! Hope you're all well. I've been playing a little more and my skills seem to be returning as my Chemo Brain seems to be diminishing. Had me worried there for a while - I thought maybe I wouldn't be able to make music again.

Beautiful guitar! I'd go for a set of nickel covered PG's for that Epi.

My favorite boutique humbuckers are the Tom Holmes alnico 2 HB's and my favorite regular production humbuckers are Seymour's alnico 2 Pearly Gates.

I have the Holmes HB's in my 2000 ES-335. I've compared them to the Holmes designed 57 Classics in my other 2000 ES-335 and I've compared them to the Pearly Gates pickups in my Strat: a 24 3/4" scale MIJ Strat with a rosewood fingerboard - same scale as the 335.

They all sound great and I can create soulful music with any of them. The 57 Classics are in no way second rate pickups although I prefer the Duncan PG and the Holmes HB's. If the 57 Classics sound muffled it may be because that's what using a 250K or 300K volume pot with paf style humbuckers sounds like to me: muffled.

I no longer own a Les Paul but I did replace the 300K pots and .047 ceramic caps with 500K pots and .02 Orange Drops in my Les Paul that used to own, That change made the 57 Classics sound much more open and the .02 caps seemed to leave more mids in the tone when I rolled the tone control down some to get those 60's Clapton and Beck tones I like. Huge improvement and a much more detailed tone than the stock wiring...at least for me.

The Duncan Pearly Gates HB's are similar to the Tom Holmes pickups and for 1/3 of the price of the Holmes HB's! Jeremy has commented on this as well.

PG's have never sounded harsh or to bright to me in any of my guitars and I always use 500K pots and .02 caps with humbuckers. But putting nickel covers on them will give them a slightly warmer tone than uncovered and nickel covers just look "right" on the 335.

Hell yeah! Good to see you back, Lew. You have been missed.

Thanks guys - I really do appreciate the kind words. I do stop by now and then to read some posts, check out the latest dramas :eyecrazy: and see what you guys are up to. Once in a while I'll post a reply if I can help or if no one else has provided the right answer to a question I know the answer to. I don't spend much time on forums or online these days though.

Thanks again!

Lew

Re: pickup suggestions for epiphone dot!

I'm in with the Pearly Gates crowd. Don't worry about the bridge being too bright. You can roll back the tone control a bit and be left with some beautiful fat mids.
