Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

I need some advice about selecting some pickups… And hope you can help.

I have an old Kramer Stagemaster ---

)

--- That is not my actual guitar but it is the EXACT Same guitar I have.

In the 90’s I put EMG’s in the guitar and I am sick of them. It is a HSS configuration, and I have been looking at some of the different SD Pickups.

I already have a PRS CE24 w/ Dual stock Humbuckers, Fender Strat w/ Fender Custom Shop ‘69s / and a PRS SE with P90’s. So I have a group of guitars with a pretty wide tone spectrum when it comes to pickups.

In this Kramer, I want to stay away from Single Coil Hum… So I was thinking of using this configurations - H = SH-4 (JB) or SH-5 Custom or maybe something else?????

BUT the MID and Neck I don’t know which to use? Need Suggestions - I know the guitar came stock with a Seymour Duncan JB and 2 SSL-1's (not 100% on the singles, but pretty sure) --- I don't really want to have the single coil fender sound, but I don't want a full humbucker either - Something hot but not full humbucker... In between I suppose. But the most important thing - no hum... have to deal with it on my strat and I am over it... Love the strat sound, hate the strat hum.

My band plays rock covers like Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Black Sabbath, Queens of the Stoneage… And some other standard / alternative Rock. I also use this guitar for drop tunings - mostly Drop C and Eb (Sword - Alice in Chains).

Any suggestions and/or Idea’s of which pickup would fit best in which position for my variety of music would be MUCH – MUCH appreciated.

Thanks,

Corey

P.S. --- > More info: I play through at H&K Trilogy and GT-8 with a Marshall 4x12 with G12T-75's & V30's in X configuration.

What about a couple of cool rails for mid and neck? Not as HB as full HB's, no hum, clean up nice if you ever need to go there, and can hang with a full sized HB if you need it to. I have a couple in a guitar and I really like them.

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

I have been looking at the cool rails... Or maybe even a Cool Rails in the Neck and Vintage Rails in the mid...

Maybe a JB (SH-4) or Custom (SH-5) - SVR-1 mid - SCR-1 in Neck.

Anyone have this config or know if it would sound good for my purpose. This is more of my Heavy Song guitar... Leave the Strat / PRS's for might softer stuff.

I also play lead most of the time... will these pickups cut like I need them to?

Any More Suggestions!?!?

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

1st let me say, Kramers ROCK!! Now, on to the question..

Many Kramers came stock with JBs and they are a great match. I have a Pacer Imperial with the stock JB and it sounds awesome and covers alot of ground. I also have a Focus 6000 which is H/s/s and I have a Custom 8 in the bridge of that one. Custom with and alnico 8 magnet. That gives me a great lead tone. Great power (not overwhelming) and cut as the Custom does, but the A8 gives alittle more organic warmth than the regular Custom.
I would recommend either of those. I have a new Alternative 8 ordered and will put that in my Charvel 4 and hopefully will be able to recommend that too!!

Im not a big single coil guy so Ill refrain from babbling about your single coil issue other than to say I have Dimarzio Fast track 1s in the neck and mid of my Focus and its is awesome!

Good luck!

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

Dimarzio Fast Track 1 for the middle and neck positions. I have them in my HSS guitar and it is the best pickup I have had in that guitar. The output, unlike everything before them, keeps up perfectly with the high output bridge humbucker. The tone is almost as fat as a humbucker but with a lot of single coil character.

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

I will have to check out the Fast Track 1 --- How do they compair to the Dimarzio Cruisers? Just a little hotter? Should I match the two Single coils? Or try to mix them up? What would be an intersting mix if so?

How about a Cool Rails or Vintage Rails? Would they mix well with a Fast Track?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make the right selection for me and the guitar I am putting them in...

Thanks again everyone.

I have a guitar with cool rails and they are much hotter and more humbucker sounding than Fast track 1s. And the hot rails are even hotter and thicker sounding.
Fast track 2s are much hotter also. You can absolutely use a combo of the FT1 and cruiser for more flavor. just have to decide which one you want in which position.
But my FT1/ft1/custom8 does it all..

That really isn't a bad idea... but i don't want the hum... Has anyone used the Virtual Vintage? Looks like a great pickup. Does SD make anything like it? A Slightly hotter but still vintage sounding noiseless single?

I am kind of leaning towards the Cruiser / Fast Track for my two Single Coils spots... Will try both out in Each and see how it goes. I have not purchased them yet tho... any more suggestions would be appreciated.

For Duncan, I'd say:
(keeping with the original setup but hum- canceling N/M)
N: STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus® for Strat®
M: STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus® for Strat®
B: SH-4 JB Model™

(for an updated version)
N: SVR-1 Vintage Rails™ for Strat®
M: SVR-1 Vintage Rails™ for Strat®
B: SH-5 Duncan Custom™

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

BTW, I have the TB-5 (SH-5) in my F-1000 and Pacer Custom II. Sound GREAT!!

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

Just get the Fast Tracks. Truuuust me... :biglaugh: How a pickup can sound so chewy yet so defined, I don't know!

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

Thank you all VERY much for the suggestions... So I heard about the 18v mod with EMG's the other day and decided to give it a try last night. The sound Definitly improved. The pickups were a little hotter and more harmonic. I am going to wait until practice next week and try them out in a band situation to see if this changes my mind. If not...

I will most likely go with this setup:

H = JB TB-4 (Maybe a Custom - TB-5)
S mid = STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus
S neck = Fast track 1 (may swap neck and mid to try out in different possitions)

Will let you know.... Thanks again to everyone for helping me out here!

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

Okay... So this is a Big Bump from a while ago... I got the pickups and installed them... This is the setup I went with.

H = JB TB-4
S mid = STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus
S neck = Fast track 1

I LOVE the JB in the Bridge!!! Forgot how BAD ASS THIS PICKUP IS!!!! I am almost tempted to put one in my PRS!?!?!?! Don't get me wrong... I like my stock pickups in my PRS... but My GOD, this thing is GREAT!!!!

After playing around, I found the Classic Stack didn't fit well with the other two. And I think I am going to go with something else in the Mid possition. I like the Fast Track 1 and Maybe want something a little hotter.

What would you all think of this... Maybe moving the Fast Track 1 to the Mid and adding a Pro Track to the Neck? Or Maybe even a Chopper? I also thought maybe just getting another Fast Track 1 and have both the Single spost having the same? Is there a benifit to matching pickups in different spots? Or would I get a wider range of sounds with 2 different in Neck / Mid?

Re: Pickup Suggestions Needed... HSS Kramer

I have Fast Tracks in both the neck and mid of my Kramer. You could go with something different, but keep in mind, even if you use the same pup, they will sound different based on the position under the strings.. Try your fast track in the neck and in the mid positions, and if you like it in both, you are set.. They sound great together!

BTW, glad you bumped this, I was wondering how you made out.
