Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

Hi all, I hope you're all well. I've been hovering around a long old while and reading/searching older threads for help.

Anyway I've got a few questions that I'm hoping you can all offer some experience and advice to help me out please?

First confession is I've bought some pickups to replace my current humbuckers, and unfortunately they aren't SD's (I know, I know, in my defence I was considering some!).

So I own a custom Wolfgang style guitar I bought used with 2 direct mount pickups in it (made by Sin Pickups), I really like them and they are very similar in DCR (can't remember exactly but somewhere around 16k neck and 14k bridge) and sound/tone to the actual EVH Wolfgang Pickups I had in my EVH Wolf before I sold it, I actully prefer them I think as they have minimal potting and ring clearer. The guitar has a solid alder body, maple neck and rosewoood board, and of course the pickups are direct mount with the controls same as the EVH.

In recent months however I've been lusting for lower output PAF style pickups in there and had lowered my search to a number of SD's (Zep Style set, Slash, Seths etc.) and also the Suhr Thornbuckers or Thormbucker+. After pricing things up and making final checks I stumbled by accident on Porter Pickups and then shortlisted the Blender set and also the Anthem set. I managed to get a great deal on a nearly new set of Blender Pickups from eBay which was great, if they don't work out then I can always move them on and try something else.

So the first problem I have is that the pickups are direct mount currently and shaped a la the EVH with the triangular tabs and the ones I've won have the the square tab style baseplate. I've read that using a Dremel style tool is the best way to trim them, is that correct? Is their a cheaper way I can do it that won't damage the pickup? (Don't have a Dremel!). Should I wrap the pickup in tons of tape to prevent metal cuttings getting in the winds? Would it be better to change the baseplate instead? Any other advice welcome please!

Second, I'm going for a slightly altered setup when I rewire them and will be using a Free-Way switch to achieve this, I'm a basic solder jockey (cable repairs only so far) so how difficult is it to wire that switch in? Should I consider lots of practice or farming the job out to someone else?

Setup wise I have 1 Vol, 1 Tone, and was looking at 2 wiring options:

Normal 3,2,1, : Bridge HB/Both Parallel HB/Neck HB
Then positions 4,5,6, : Series + Out of Phase Bridge & Neck HB/Neck Coil Split Slug and Bridge Coil Split Screw in Parallel/Bridge Coil Split Screw

Or Normal 3,2,1,
Then 4,5,6,: Neck Coil Split Slug/Series + Out of Phase Bridge & Neck/Bridge Coil Split Slug

I'm leaning towards the first option as more useful and more flexible with more tones available, also I can't see me using a 8k neck pickup split much although I'm open to thoughts. Any idea what kinda sound the Coil Splits in Parallel wound sound like?? Tele middle position like I'm hoping or similar to a Strat in the in-between positions possibly?? I play stuff from Classic Rock/Metal, to Indie/Shoegaze type stuff also I do play cleanish a lot too hence the need for some single coil tones occasionally.

Any advice any one can offer would be gratefully received, I have attached a few pictures and stuff below that may help. Thanks all!

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

yeah, just dremel that sucker.

ideally, in a perfect world, totally remove the base plate. if you are good with a soldering iron and basic usage of a few small screw drivers, you should be good. if you have to ask how to do it, don't move forward with that approach.

or... get your blue tape and seal up the coils real nice where no metal shavings can get in there and cause any shorts... and dremel those feet down how you want them.

Cheers Darth, was hoping to avoid purchasing a Dremel but it appears I may have no choice!! Thanks for the help mate.

meh, maybe you don't. if you have some old school files and a little time, you can always put in some elbow grease.

I think I've heard about some people using some sort of tin snips, but I'd not try my hand at that approach. maybe if you're more skilled with them that I am. lol!

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

I would use a combination of the snips and a file. Mark the portion you're going to remove, cut off the big portions, then file to the precise shape. If you're afraid of making a mistake, cut off less. Filing the whole thing would cause me to get impatient and screw something up.

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

I've done this with a Dremel..I'd be afraid of snips snapping the whole tab off. I also have much more fine control over a Dremel, though.

yes! that's my concern as well... with my luck, I'd totally screw up the mounting feet! haha!

it'd be nice if there were aftermarket baseplate options with the triangle tab/feet.

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

Thanks all, yeah I'm leaning towards the Dremel maybe although its cool to have options thats for sure!

Any one have any thoughts on the Free-Way switch and how easy it is solder, and also thoughts on which wiring schematic would offer the best options?

Thanks all.

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

A dremel with a cut-off disc is the easiest way, but if you don't have a dremel and if you don't think you will get much use out of it after this project, save some money and just use tin snips to cut off the bulk (no worry about causing any harm to your pup) and then file it to your desired end result. Yes, it's a good idea to wrap the pup with tape to prevent metal filings from getting into it.

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

Thanks GuitarDoc, I'm thinking the snips may be a more straightforward solution perhaps.

Anyone have much experience soldering a Free-Way switch? Thanks

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

Hey everyone, sorry to be a pain but I'm wondering if anyone can help further please.

I plan on using the first freeway diagram above where only the bridge pickup will have a spilt coil. I've been looking at the option of having a resistor in the "dead" coils ground circuit like PRS do to fatten up the tone a bit. However I'm wondering if its possible with the freeway switch?

Looking at the diagram it appears I connect both ground wires from the pickups before the switch meaning I then can't add the resistor inline with just the bridge pickup. Does that mean I can't do it? Or can I add the resistor before I connect the two grounds together and will it work the same as the PRS style circuit? All of the diagrams I've seen have the resistor around the pot and push/pull switch which is what is confusing me somewhat. My limited electronic knowledge suspects if I add the resistor in before the switch I will be affecting the tone of the pickup in full humbucking mode. I have asked the Freeway guys themselves and I'm waiting for a reply however if anyone can offer any help I'd be appreciative.

Thanks in advance, I should also say I'm trying to avoid any push/pull pots or mini switches as I'd like to do it all with just the toggle.

Cheers

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

Why not just sell the pickups that dont fit and get some Dimarzios. They made the original EVH pickups and their stuff already has rhe triangle tabs.

Re: Pickup Swap Advice and Help - Thanks

Ermmmm, I'm not sure how to answer this without seeming sarcastic, sorry. However I'm fitting these pickups as I want them, not any other set unfortunately. I did look at the usual suspects when deciding but these popped up at the right time on eBay so I went for them.

Sorry but we'd already moved the discussion beyond the practicalities of fitting them and onto wiring. Any ideas on wiring a free-way switch perchance???!!
