Pickup Upgrade for Epiphone Les Paul Standard

Re: Pickup Upgrade for Epiphone Les Paul Standard

what Gibson's stock pickups do is get you 90% of the way there for all those different tones & aftermarket pickups refine it for you

For some players, Gibson PU's get them 90% of the way, or 100% of the way. For others they don't. Gibson's approach seems to be:

"We'll put good pickups in our instruments, if you like them, fine. For those who want different or better ones you can buy those elsewhere. We're not trying to compete in the PU aftermarket. We're a guitar maker. We make our own PU's for economic reasons, as it's cheaper than buying someone else's. We're not slugging it out with high-end PU makers on tone, authenticity, or quality. We price our PU's to give our guitars a higher perceived value. That's where our profit is, guitars not pickups."

To be fair you could make that statement about any product in any market ever, it isn't an objective assessment of said products quality or not.

edit: It would be fascinating to know what portion of professionally recorded & released music used stock pups compared to aftermarket, what pro players & producers use day to day, that would be the acid test

I’ve always been curious to know those numbers too.

Re: Pickup Upgrade for Epiphone Les Paul Standard
