pickup wiring question, Tele

Hi, thanks for reading. I'm new to the forum and I'm starting to get into mods on my electric guitars.

So, I'm building a Tele w/ double humbuckers, 1 tone, 1 vol and a three way switch. For pickups I'm using an Ibanez super 70 neck pos. and an Ibanez super 80 in bridge pos.

Question, the super 80 has 3 wires, red, white and uninsulated. Not going to coil tap, just trying to figure what wire is going where on the three way switch. I am assuming white is hot since the super 70 neck has 2 wires and white is hot on it. Can anybody help a rookie out?

Not 100% but I belive you just tape off the red wire. White is hot and the bare is ground. From what i could find thats what i would try first. Sorry couldn't be more helpful.

BK, thanks for the input. I had a feeling that was what I was going to have to do. regards, rick

welcome

to be sure, you could take an ohm meter and measure the DC resistance between the white and bare, between the red and bare, and between the red and white

that will let you know for sure which is the full humbucker output

thanks, so the combo with the most resistance should be the full hb output?

Re: pickup wiring question, Tele

Here is a thought that you can think when taking those ohm readings.

I think the wires are hot and two grounds. I mean the bare wire is the one that goes always to ground and then the the other two are the start and end of the pickup. Meaning one goes to hot and two goes to ground.

OR...

One is hot one is the split wire and one is ground. Which is basically what the guys have been talking about. Meaning one goes to hot and only the bare wire goes to ground. And the wire left ovet is what you use if you want to split the hum.

So...

It's probably one of these two scenarios. Between two of the wires the dc resistance should be somewhere 12-18 kOhm (full humbucker) and the third wire should read half of that with either of the two wires. This is the second scenario meaning there is a split wire. OR You take the hot wire and connect it with the other coloured wire and it should read the full dc resistance and the bare wire shuold not read anything with either of the other wires. This is the first scenario and means there is no split wire just a separate ground wire and the the normal two coil wires.

I hope this makes any sense. If not I'll try to clarify it.

Zhaggy, kiitos for the info, when I removed them from an old Hondo II LP, 2 wires of the 3 were soldered together. I have a pic for reference, just thought it might have been put together wrong by the guy who had installed them originally, the wiring was not done very well to begin with. I'll use an ohm meter on them to verify everything. regards, rick

Ole hyvä vaan.

Re: pickup wiring question, Tele

Zhaggy, you were right about the 2 grounds. muchas gracias!

Oh cool. Sometimes there are different takes on how the wires are connected to the pickup and only way to find out is to trial and error and/or measure the resistance. Glad you got it working.
