Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

oops..
are u sure the switch has 7 lugs ? not eight ?

i had a 7 lugs 5 way switch like that, but i forgot how it works ( the connection ) , im not really sure if it works like 8 lugs switch. hopefully im wrong.

it's easier for your wiring progress if it has 8 lugs. or even easier and useful if u use 3 way switch like Artie said, so u can have a use of your push pull pot.

but if u still wanna use that switch, ( and im assuming it has different connection with 8 lugs one, pls someone tell me im terribly wrong ) first, we have to determine the lugs connection. do u have multimeter ?

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

Maybe I will get a 5-way superswitch then? I want these tone options.

With the PushPull up:
Neck position = top magnet of the neck pickup
neck+mid postion = top of neck and bottom of bridge
mid position = bottom of neck and top of bridge
mid + bridge position = bottom of neck and bottom of bridge
bridge position = bottom magnet of bridge pickup

With the push-pull down:
neck position = neck pickup parallel
neck + mid position = neck pickup series
mid position = out-of-phase bridge
mid + bridge position = bridge pickup series
bridge position = bridge pickup parallel

Is this possible with the 5-way superswitch and my Push-pull? I hope it won't be too crazy to wire :S

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

u mean top coil & bottom coil instead of top magnet and bottom magnet...:)

it could be, but it might not be in the order like u want...

for consideration, with a superswitch and a push pull, you can get so much wiring possibilities,...some of them useful, some of them not so useful, and some might not useful at all coz the sound is very little difference between position. I had a superswitch , 2 push pulls, 2 mini toggles,..and i had the craziest wiring super multiple tone options ! ...but later on i realized some of them not really useful and finally it got me back to my simple 3 way switch :D

i'll try to work on with possible useful tones and tone options for you...

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

here u go Jiet..
jiet.jpg

with the push pull pot down you'll get :

1. Dimarzio HB
2. Dimarzio Parallel
3. Both HB
4. Duncan Parallel
5. Duncan HB

with push pull up :

1. Dimarzio Bottom coil
2. Duncan Top series with Dimarzio Bottom
3. Dimarzio Top parallel with Duncan Bottom
4. Duncan Top parallel with Dimarzio Bottom
4. Duncan Top coil.

what dimarzio ure using ? if it's an identical hex scews, make sure the North towards the bridge.

hopefully im not missing something in drawing.., now i really need a hot coffe

:D

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

awesome! That's just what I needed! I just need to pick up a superswitch now ^^

Just a couple questions though:
1) Do the wire colors match the pickup type? because Duncan and Dimarzio pickups have the same colors but each color is different polarity (or so I've seen from other schematics)
2) the HB settings is humbucking, correct? does that mean it's in series?

Thanks alot for your help! I can't wait til I get my superswitch!

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

Oh, and one other quick question, that green capacitor (i think that's what it is?) on the Push/Pull pot, can I leave that out? Or do I need it there? Thanks again!

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

1. yes, the colour from pickups matches Dimarzio and Duncan since they're what you use.
2. yes HB means humbucker in series

3. you can omit the capacitor if you want. but if you do, it means you're not using tone control, so i suggest u get a DPDT on on replacing push pull pot.

by using DPDT, you can do quick switching better than pulling/pushing the pot.
:)

anytime mate.

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

oops sorry i did wrong drawing. on dimarzio, the North magnet is top and South is the one towards the bridge.

more coffee,...more coffee...:D

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

Hey Benye, I just finished soldering everything and it sounds great! Except there's a few things:

When I switch it to bridge HB mode, it's not humbucking. I am actually getting the same tone as just the Duncan's top coil. I followed your diagram closely so I'm pretty sure I soldered everything correctly. Maybe there's a wire that you mis-labelled? Thanks again :)

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

hold on,.. are u sure you're not pulling the push pull pot ?

while the switch on the bridge,..try play while push and pulling the pot. if the sound is dead same no difference, maybe there's a shorting wire.

the bridge HB splitting the coil showed by the dark green wire on the superswitch. if that wire in contact with any of black wire which comes out from the switch, it will be Bridge HB coil split. They contact each other only if you pull the pot.

Other than that, make sure they dont contact each other.

Is there a good tip for covering the soldered points so that it wont accidently touch another point? I tried using electrical tape but it's really hard to wrap it around the solder, since it loses it's stickyness. I'll check the dark green wire and make sure it's not touching anything else after I get home from work. Thanks for the quick reply :)

Re: Pickup wiring schematic for my new guitar?

you could use 1/8" heat shrink tube.., heat it with light flame or solder iron and it'll become insulator. they're great for tight connections. i got em really really cheap here. 1 $ for 5 meter :)
