Pickup's bare wire disappeared

I have a Dimarzio Virtual P90 - 4 connector plus ground wire - that somehow has lost the protective coating around the wires for the first inch or so coming out of the coils... and the 4 colored wires are visible there, but the bare wire is not. The bare wire is still there in the sheath and where you connect to the pots and switch. Poking around, I can't quite tell where the bare wire should be connecting to the pickup. Any thoughts?

Not sure I follow the specificities of this pickup but usually you would solder the bare to the plate in a P90, no?

It's constructed like a mini humbucker, voiced like a P90. I guess that is the question - what does the bare wire get soldered to on the pickup side. If it's the plate then that's an easy fix.
