Pickups for a Custom LP-ish guitar

Re: Pickups for a Custom LP-ish guitar

Nah.

When you hear it, you'll be thunderstruck. You won't touch anything else with a 10' pole.
Ahh, AC/DC. Can defiantly hear that now that i think of it

Just looked at the newer demos on the Seymour Duncan youtube, and the whole lotta humbuckers sounded even better now...i think its between those two now.

Re: Pickups for a Custom LP-ish guitar

For this:

  1. PAF style pickup with a open, vintage feel. But need sto take gain well and not get flubby.
  2. I will also have triple shots, so splits and Parallel will help the tonal diversity.
  3. Bands i want to hit the ballpark of include: Led Zepplin, ZZ Top, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Dio, Black Keys, Guns and Roses, and Cream.

I would consider
  1. 59B / Seth neck (warm/even side - don't know how the triple shots will do, have to shop floor order 4-conductor)
  2. Whole Lotta Humbucker set (if all the split/parallel options have any importance)
  3. Pearly Gates bridge / Jazz neck (brighter side - don't know how the triple shots will do here either)

FWIW - what I'm using in my Les Paul and SG to cover a lot of similar ground are:
  • 59/Custom Hybrid bridge / Seth neck (sharp mid sound, some chop to it)
  • 78 Model bridge / Jazz neck (bright side, lots of chime to work with, lots of range on the tone control)

Re: Pickups for a Custom LP-ish guitar

Right now, im considering specing out a guitar from Chris Mitchell Guitars in Stateboro, Ga. Looking for that iconic humbucker vibe with this one.

The Guitar is basically a mahogany with thicker maple cap and rosewood fretboard LP.

Beautiful guitars, but i need to decide what Duncans to order her with. Here is my thoughts on the pickups..

I want to fairly balanced pickups, that match each other well. Needs to be a PAF style pickup with a open, vintage feel. But need sto take gain well and not get flubby. Output is not a huge concern, as i can always use a booster. I will also have triple shots, so splits and Parallel will help the tonal diversity.

I mostly play blues rock, classic rock, blues, and metal (though i have an Epi with a JB for that).

Bands i want to hit the ballpark of include: Led Zepplin, ZZ Top, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Dio, Black Keys, Guns and Roses, and Cream.

Whole Lotta Humbuckers and Pearly Gates sets seem to get great reviews for this. The Saterday night special is also a choice. Which of these are better for me in your opinion?

i'm generally partial to A2 HBs for the bridge for the harmonics and mids and an A5 HB for the neck to tighten things up. so of the choices i'd look at the PG bridge and WLH for the neck. also be sure to use 300k or 500k pots for more clarity.
