Pickups for a Flying V

So my brother wants me to soup up his flying V and I have NO experience with pickups in a V. He wants a warm round smooth and lower output tone, He basically just plays clean/slightly overdriven playing classic rock, beatles, wilco type stuff. Mellow I guess is the word. He just plays through a epiphone valve junior combo so 5 watt tube amp with one knob. I was thinking 59s but don't know how they would react in a V, Pearly gates?? Alnico II pro?? Thanks guys!

Re: Pickups for a Flying V

Any of Duncan's PAF's, all of which are great. The A2 models will be smoother, '59's will have more high end and jangle.

Re: Pickups for a Flying V

I have an Explorer which I think is similar. The 59 is nice in the neck slot and the C/59 with an
A2 magnet but it might be a little hot for the sound he's going for.

So 59s or A2ps, but don't rule out Seths.

Re: Pickups for a Flying V

I'd go with A2P or A2P Slash or Pearly Gates. They are always good pickups in any guitar.

PG but it's still PAF-class which to many modern kids sounds bright. The Custom does very well in there.

The ultimate mellow (or "woman-tone") would be Lollar Imperials but I never tried them in a V.
