Pickups for a Gecko

Here's my Les Paul.

It has Burstbuckers which sound fine...'typical' i guess. The neck is almost perfect...the bridge needs just a BIT more balls and crunch to it.

I play heavy bluesy punk rock-n-roll...major influences include Hendrix, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Slayer, the Clash, the Melvins and more modern acts like High On Fire and Mastodon...

I plug into vintage-style tube amps...usually my 68 Bassman...using a series of OD and fuzz pedals for my dirt...i like to get as big and fat a tone as possible without oversaturating the gain and getting all fizzy and buzzy.

I love the CustomCustom in the bridge of my SG-X and liked it even more in my friend's J. Nunis Singlecut...having a hard time settling on a neck pickup. I would almost just stick with the stock BurstBucker except I want to set this thing up with the Jimmy Page switching schematic and the stock pups are 2-conductor.

So what's worked for you guys? What do you suggest? I'm thinking a CustomCustom bridge / Pearly Gates neck setup would be ideal...Alnico 2's, one's cool for a hot pickup, the other's a 'hot PAF'...but I'm willing to hear suggestions.

To make a long post short, what's the most diverse rock-to-metal pickup set you've tried in a Les Paul? I don't wanna go any hotter than the CustomCustom in the bridge but if you've got a super convincing story about the strengths of the Distortion or Invader i'm down to listen :smokin: Thanks dudes.

Re: Pickups for a Gecko

I'm not sure what I'd recommend, but the guitarist for SPEWTILATOR uses a PG neck and CC bridge. You could check out their myspace page for tonal references. Let me know if you need the link :lmao:

Sorry, man -- couldn't resist.

Re: Pickups for a Gecko

Don't know to this day why but a PGn was not working in my LP std. I prefered the '59n and AP2n, and the AP2n is still in there. They both match up well with a Brobucker in the bridge but before that I tried and liked a C5 which I may try again. We play classic rock covers and it works pretty darn well.

P.s I really like that burst, nice one!

I have a very old zebra 4 conductor set of 496R/500T in my 1996 Classic Premium Plus. I have CTS push/pull tone pots to split the coils. They sound very open in my DSL100 clean channel, and very crunchy on the lead channel.

HAHA...i still haven't heard that band...all i know about them is their drummer liked to look at my balls while he made pizza.

Why didn't the PGn work for you? I've tried the 59n in a Strat and LOVED it...heard the A2P in the same Les Paul I heard the CustomCustom in and it sounded good but not quite 'pissed off' enough...which is what made me think of the Pearly Gates.

Oh and I'm glad you like the burst -- "Geckoburst" was only in production for a year or two and it's the most notoriously hated finish in Les Paul history. I was gonna sign up for the Les Paul Forum when I got it but there are like 3 threads there already about how much they hate my awesome guitar :smokin: guess they makin me famous

Sounds cool. I hate the 500T in my SG...loved the split tone, hated the full tone. Thanks for the info tho.

I like me a Duncan Custom...
Custom in the bridge.
Custom 5 in bridge, Pgates Neck

You guys are making me think i'm on the right track. I'll probably try my CustomCustom and if i don't like it i've got alnico 5 and ceramic mags around I can switch to...

Thanks for all the help guys, any more would be appeciated!

FWIW, I know absolutely squat about that band or their music -- can't get past the name! However, I do think the PGn/CC combo would be sweet.

My number one "Worst Finish I Ever Saw On A Les Paul" would have to the Latte Cream, which came out about the same time as the Gekko. BARF!

I have ten LPs and I think the Gekko is kinda cool, even if it is ugly! LOL! I like it!
