im looking for a good clean sound basicly but will still give a good vintage rock distortion. i was thinking along the lines of steve howe. i know he used pafs in his hollow bodys and i absolutly love his clean sound. when i get this guitar im gonna be running it through a marshall jcm 2000.
i was thinking a set of 59s or maybe some seths. what do you guys think?

Re: pickups for a lp double cut

My Hamer Studio Customs were very similar to your guitar. I tried alot of Duncan pickups in them and finally went back to the original pickups they came with: Jazz Neck and JB Bridge. That set just sounded the best: deeper and livlier and just more fun.

I tried a Seth Lover neck and Antiquity neck but they weren't quite as bright, deep and lively as the Jazz.

And when I tried the Custom 5 and Custom Custom bridge pickups in those two Hamers they seemed to sound great ONLY when I played very LOUD through my '59 Tweed Bassman! (it sounds like a mini Marshall Plexi!)

At lower volumes neither the CC or C5 came to life in those guitars.

The JB just sounded fuller, livlier and better.

The double cutaway seems to give a thinner sound than a single cutaway regular Les Paul, perhaps because the neck isn't as stiff because it's longer and not supported as well as it is in a single cutaway guitar.

The result is less bass and lower mids, IMO, than a single cut Les Paul has.

The Jazz and JB set just sounded fuller and better in those particular Hamers...though in my semi hollowbody Hamer Monoco I couldn't be happier with the Seth Lover neck and Custom Custom bridge pickup set. They work beautifully in that guitar...but they weren't quite as nice in the double cutaway Hamer Studios.

I tried a 59n in a 24 fret guitar and the results were less than impressive especially if you are looking for the usual 22 fret LP neck tones. The reason was the a5 magnet, it emphasized the eq separation and bass, and the highs were relatively similar to that from a middle position.

The best in the duncan line I can recommend is an antiquity neck HB. The dun aged a2 magnet gives it a soft, and round tone that works great in guitars with 24 frets.
