Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

I've built a solid body black walnut guitar (Hi, I'm new) and I use exclusively Duncan pickups. I've found a number of things with Walnut and the 1 constant is that one person will say it's a "dark" sounding wood and others will say it's "bright"/"midrangey" etc. For my latest project we used a Jazz in the neck a custom wound APH-1b in a mini-bucker configuration and an Invader in the bridge. We're still finishing the guitar but we did plug the electronics in quickly for a tone check and everything worked out fine.

I would say stick to more Vintage sounding pickups, but it's hard to tell depending on the character of the block of wood and the overall shape of the body can change things too.

Every comment I've read here is pretty accurate, depending on that persons experience. Good luck!

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

Just as a follow up, I went a little overboard and grabbed the following to test based on the many suggestions so far. One or two of these I already have so I didn't drain the grocery budget completely...

Pearly Gates - Neck & Bridge
A8 Bridge
59n
AII Pro Bridge

I should definately be able to find a solid match out of the choices I have. :)
Waiting for a new bridge this week - hoping to play all next weekend!

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

Just a little follow up on how things are shaping up -

I grabbed a Custom 8 Bridge and a set of PG pups - all covered.

I tried the PGn and the C8b first - They matched up fairly well and the C8 had a lot more balls than I expected. It wasn't boomy but certainly had a lot more low end than I expected.

The PGb went in next and obviously was a good match - these are great pickups!

I have an A2Pro neck pickup I'll swap in next.

It's hard to tell what two I'll keep in place at this time though. I may have to try the C8 in another guitar since I don't think this one is the best fit...

Having fun and narrowing things down! Installed a TonePros bridge as well which is another great piece of hardware. More later.

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

Walnut is actually a fairly low mid heavy tone wood. I had a JB and APHn in my walnut Carvin DC127C that sounded awesome.

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

jb/jazz I have herd in everything and it works also jazz coil taped sounds amazing.

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

After trying a few sets and some mix & match pickups, I couldn't get the sound & feel I was hoping for. The original pickups were terrible so I was at a loss (and had a pile of pickups just laying around since nothing worked out...)

I revisited this thread and Ace had a suggestion that I hadn't tried - A2P's -
Wymore was closing out some sets at fair prices so I ordered them up.

I went with the Slash A2's and they were spot on! Regular A2's would have worked just as well but the Z\RZ set was in stock and the cost was about the same.

These have been by far the best sounding of the bunch and they haven't moved since they were installed. :)

Re: Pickups for a Walnut Guitar -

Could be that Carvin is not a good guitar.

I think A2P's would be KILLER in a Walnut The LP or SG.

no carvin is an awsome guitar.

but we all need somthing differnt right
thats why there are jackson esp gibson fender prs shcecter ect ect

I've put unoriented A5's in a couple of my C8's, and it gives them more dynamics, not as stiff and 'all out' as an A8. Roughcast A5's are also a good choice to take off some high end, but retain some of an A5's character.

Bumping this one from a search.
