pickups for AC/DC

Brown Note

I have a flying V guitar with the traditional gibson specs but with not so good pickups(ceramic gibsons). What duncans will get me *the* rock sound?

59 is a quite obvious choise, but are there better? Gibson 57 classic has A2 magnets and 59 has A5, so there's a big difference in the sound and feel. Gibson pickups would be great but they cost honey, bees included, and i've got tremendously great experiences with duncans(actives and passives)

Re: pickups for AC/DC

something in the low-to-medium range with an a5 should get you there, though i remember reading somewhere on here that an un-potted '59 in the bridge is perfect for that application.

Re: pickups for AC/DC

An unpotted 59 sounds about right... The JB's I've played sounded like they'd do good for this as well.

Oh, and perhaps the AIIPro's may work for you as well.

A JB is a good choice, but there are better choices. I think the JB might be a little too hot.

brobucker

nuff said

i would back up this suggestion, if it didn't cost more than a gibson pickup, and the OP said that even gibson's prices are a bit high;)
a brobucker would be a great choice for this application though, especially in a brighter guitar like an SG.

Re: pickups for AC/DC

C5 can do AC/DC pretty well, especially if you use the volume knob.

Re: pickups for AC/DC

If we're talling Angus a 59 is the ticket...JB's are too hot, C5's are too scooped and all the alnico II pickups are too soft in the bottom and top...59's will give you all the Angus you can stand.

I beg to differ, the C5 I had in my old Epi SG was "Back In Black" all over, I couldn't imagine a better pickup for Angus type tones.

Thats fine...for me the C5 is too scooped and too hot...seeing that Angus uses PAF style pickups I can't imagine using something as hot as a C5 but thats me...

Re: pickups for AC/DC

Anyone even thought to suggest a gretch filtertron? Malcom is in the band also, Iirc.

actually, i have an easier time using the same guitar and settings as angus' tone, but just coil cut to slug and turn the tone/volume controls about 1/4. imo it's actually easier to get his tone that way. and, it's the cheaper, easier way;)

Re: pickups for AC/DC

Angus's live tone is a Marshall cranked extremely loud if not flat out.... i could not see using a high gain PU in that setting myself... but at a lower volume like the rest of us i could... as odd as that sounds... i like a middle of the road output PU when i'm playing at lower volumes but once it is cranked i tend to go for a lower output...

The Gibson 57 is a winner i would think... and some of the Duncan PAF's should do just as well.... i love my 59's except mine seem to allow a lot of noise thru... never could figure out why but they are noisier then my Duncan Custom... I've installed those 59's in different axes, with different electronics and they just hum almost like a single coil under gain settings...

The 59 if i could get the noise under controll with the ones i already own i'd buy many more... i love the way they look with a maple spacer and the paper coil tape...

Re: pickups for AC/DC

I had a '59 in my other epi LP and I realize its NOT a V but it did get a great AC/DC sound to my rookie ears.

I know it was said but I bet just about any PAF Alnico pickup is going to get you close.

Re: pickups for AC/DC

I get very close to Angus tones with a PG+, the 59b being the closest thing in the production line up. This through a Rivera R100.

Re: pickups for AC/DC

a JB is waaay too hot for ACDC... in an LP anyway

i agree completely with Mcearlock on the filtertron; malcolm's sound is 'the AC/DC sound' IMO. given that the filtertron's basically an underwound mini-humbucker with 12 screw poles i'd recommend a demon with 12 filisters - probably the closest you'll get w/out dropping 200 bucks on a TV classic.

unless you want to try a GFS liverpool vintage (haven't tried these yet)

is this a 500T set..? you shouldn't have too much trouble trading/selling it if you decide you don't want it. same mag set-up as the invader
