Hi, I bought a Schecter last week that has an Ebony fingerboard. After a few days, I find the PUPs to contain too much energy in the upper registers. Think a JB to the power of 2. Any recommendations for pups to tame this and still hit the front end of my tube amp hard? Dont want too dark or lose the harmonics, just want to mellow out the sharp attack?
Thanks

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

You might take a look at the Custom Custom, which has almost as much output as a JB, but with a different mid-focused EQ pattern.

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

Got a set of BW sitting here. My concern was they may be "harsh" in an already bright guitar? Thanks as always Gregory

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

Thanks Rex. Really have 0 experience with DiMarzio. Not because I have anything against them, I just have tons of info available on Duncans

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

250k volume pot then see where you like the tone control. If you it's too bright past 7 then switch it to a 250k as well.

+1 on the AT-1!

More DiMarzio recommendations:

Super 3
Gravity Storm Bridge
Crunch Lab

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

I like the suggestion of the Custom Custom.

I’ve never owned a Dimarzio that I liked enough to keep.

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

Which were those? They have a lot of models.

Could any of them be applied address Ben1962's needs: high output for a bright guitar?

I like the suggestion of the Duncan Custom Custom.

I’ve never owned a Dimarzio that I liked enough to keep and I wouldn’t constantly recommend Dimarzio products on Seymour’s forum even if I did.

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

Thanks Lew. The fact that people can recommend other products is what makes this forum off the charts tho. For me, it shows confidence in their products and Lord knows I have been supporting Duncan with many purchases. I think the same about Wampler when he does favorable reviews on competitors products. Shows class to me. The Custom Custom demo did sound killer!!

The 85 is active? My only 1st hand experience with actives was my buddies ESP 401 with EMGs compared to my spalted maple Chinese guitar with The JB set. My guitar IMO and his opinion as well, sounded 10 times better. I think I just got lucky with that guitar. Low action, no buzz and sounds great.

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

Did I miss what pickup is in there now?

I like the JB best in brighter guitars.

The AT-1 is based on Andy's number one which had has/had a JB in it. I think the AT-1 is a better "all around" than the JB, and is my favorite DMZ.

The Custom family is also a good suggestion

I’ll ocassionally suggest a Lindy Fralin product here. I’m a big fan of the Fralin Vintage Hot, Blues Specials and Steel Pole 43.

I also have Tom Holmes humbuckers in my ES-335.

But I don’t do that constantly...

Another option might be to go to 250k pots if the volume and tone pots in your Schecter are 500k.

Cheaper than new pickups and might be just the ticket.

Pasadena +. Thanks for responding Ayrton. Think Bostons tone, really has tons of upper mids? Sounds great for leads, but chords with gain become a cloudy mess

Re: Pickups for bright guitars

Think thats the 1st ticket Lew. I dont mind buying Pups tho. I aint rich, but I support this industry. Always have. Love frickin guitar
