Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Yes, I know Ive already had a couple of posts on this. However.. I had most of them convoluted with other stuff such as other guitars also and such. I thought there was one more specific, but searched over an hour and cant find that one. (wish search would stop with the multiples of stuff) So, Im sorry, but putting another thread up.. One guitar.. My Red Charvel.. Pups are direct mount.
Came with Jazz and Custom.. Wanted alittle more 'tude and more separation from my other charvel with a Jazz/Hybrid. So.. Tried a Distortion. Had to put a thinner magnet in as stock, it touched on the strings.. pulled it and and went to C8.

Things to keep in mind..
Need to be avail in Red. So that rules out any of the PATB pups.
Need to be thinner than a distortion.
Hoping for alil more attitude or at least interesting variety from a Jazz/Hybrid guit.

Pups Im considering, but have never played before, are:

Black Winter set

Crunch Lab/Liquifier

Super 3 and ? i like Phil Collen's tone in def lep, but imagine he is running thru quite a rack. What is the super 3 like?? Dim's site says if you run scooped tone. I dont..

Anything Else?? cool or unique/smokin'?
Thanks

I had the same issues with the pickups not fitting in my MIJ San dimas. Wanted the Duncan distortion but it was near the strings. Ended up with patb-2 which I love, though it doesn't come in red as you said.
Maybe an alternative 8; not sure if it comes in red?
Black winters I believe will not also fit.
Dimarzio Titan and Dominion possibly?

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Thinner than a Distortion...that doesn't leave a lot in the versatility department. The Full Shred might do it, as it sounds thinner to my ears. The Pegasus might do it, too, and it is actually more versatile to me.

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Black Winter and Super 3 both have thick magnets. Same with Titan.

Dominion is regular height.

Best thing might be to check manufacturer site or call manufacturer to see pickup height on what models you are interested in. Or route out the cavity.

I think I remember this issue from a previous thread. After having similar issues, I think I'd rather have a direct mount for the thicker size and shim if I need to, rather than be limited in Pickup selection.

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

You misread the description of the Super 3, it says "Think of the Super 3™ as a Super Distortion® with more mid-range grind and chopped treble." for people that "play your amp with scooped mids and intense overdrive, this is your pickup."

I've used the Super 3, great pickup, lots of mids and kinda dark highs, but gets harmonics super easy. It's "super" fun to play. That said, it also has thick magnets so it probably won't fit.

I like the Breeds, but have only used them in basswood.

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Have you tried a JB in it yet?

Super 3 is definitely in Super distortion Range, a little smoother on the high end.

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

No, havent tried the JB.. Ive used: Custom (stock), C8 (current) and duncan distortion (with thinner mag and removing one spacer) . Maybe old faithful might do the trick... hmm. Just need a neck pup with more pizzazz

isn't it a Pro-Mod? it didn't come with a Jazz/59 set?

I think I mentioned the last time you brought it up that I've had a custom shop S-Deco set in my Pro-Mod for quite a while now. I expect them to stay there. the S-Deco A4 neck has been one of the more versatile Duncan neck pickups I've tried. maybe they will put the S-Deco back on the custom shop site.

since you mentioned the Black Winter and the Super 3, if you're up to a little routing, those are nice pickups. my opinion is that the BW set is like getting a BKP Aftermath set for a lot less (and buying Murican!)

what's going on in the neck position that you're wanting to fix?

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

FWIW, the Custom is one of my favorite pickups, it has plenty of 'tude, that early VH 'tude...

I thought the Pro Mods came with a JB in the bridge(?)

I keep reading this somewhere:

"Believe me when I say that some of the most amazing music in history was made on equipment that's not as good as what you own right now.

Jol Dantzig"

Need to be avail in Red. So that rules out any of the PATB pups.

That also limits you to standard-spaced pickups. Mincer suggested that goofy-color TB pickups were available from the custom shop, but awhile back when I asked about neon green pickups, I was told standard-spaced only.

How about one of my favorite combos: A4 59n with RCUOA5 JB?

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Try some mag swaps with your custom. A5 = Custom 5, A2 = Custom Custom

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Try an A3 in your jazz. Spanks like a single coil but still loud like a bucker

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

well the alternative 8 is a nice idea, also a red black winter, maybe even a perpetual burn ir just a pearly gates with an a8

Re: Pickups for Charvel? Yes, again...sorry

Don't know (or really care) about red, but every Charvel needs a JB. It is written.

No, my Pro Mod has a jazz/hybrid combo and its cool. Was hoping we could iron out the Hybrid neck , but that doesnt look like its gonna happen. So eventually will look for something with maybe alittle more pizazz for the neck.. The guitar Im asking about is a US Charvel. Neck is alittle bland.
