Pickups for Explorer?

Hi all.

I just bought a new Gibson Explorer and I'm happy with the guitar itself, form and playability. However, the 498r and 500t pickups was a bit of a disappointment. Way too much dark tones, and I'm not into that kind of music.. (no Skynyrd here....lol).

I've been thinking about getting the set that Mr. Duncan has put together, with the SH-4jb and the SH-2 Jazz, as I think that this will suit the guitar much better. I know that  Dave Mustaine of Megadeth has this setup in his ESP Axxion signature guitar, so if it is good enough for him, it sure as hell would be for me....hahaha.

Anyone who have experience with this? It would be much appreciated!!

Re: Pickups for Explorer?

If you wanted pickups that would be very similar to or possibly even better than the paf pickups Gibson would've used in a real '58 Explorer, then the Seth Lovers or Antiquitys would also be a great choice.

Regardless of what anyone says, IMO, the Jazz and JB is also a great set of pickups, especially if you're playing with a band. If you're not, and you play mostly at home, the JB can be a little penetrating and sharp if you keep your ears to close to the speakers. So don't so that! Onstage or from 10' or so away the JB exhibits none of the ice pick mids or sharp treble that we read complaints about...IMO. That set is Seymour's fave, BTW, and Jeff Beck recorded Cause We've Ended As Lovers with that pickup combo.

The Jazz/JB is a good set, but I find the JB a bit too compressed and dense in the mids for my tastes. In a Gibson style axe, I much preffer the Pearly Gates set or even the APH/C5 combo.
