Hi! I have just bought a electric bass FENDER SQUIER VINT.MOD.JAGUAR BASS SP and I would like to improve the pickups. Could you suggest a good and compatible combination of your products?
Thank you so much

Hello, and welcome to the Bassment!

If I understand you correctly, you're looking for pickups which fit the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar bass.

What you may not know is that this model comes from the factory with "Duncan Designed" pickups --
units which are made overseas to Seymour Duncan specifications.

I obtained this picture from the Fender website.

This description also comes from fender.com:
"Versatility comes into play with a superbly balanced dynamic duo of Duncan Designed™ pickups...a split single-coil Precision Bass® pickup (mid) paired with a hot Jazz Bass® single-coil pickup (bridge)..."

Many refer to this as a PJ (Precision/Jazz) set-up. It became quite popular in the 1980's. There are several Seymour Duncan models that fit this combination.

Take a look here -- you'll need a set of Precision pickups, plus a bridge pickup for the Jazz Bass. (the neck pickup is too narrow; make sure it's specified for the bridge)

Please make sure you have a trusted professional install these pickups. There may be some variations in the size that will have to be hand-fitted, and of course the wiring is important.
Tell us what country you are in... we can find someone to help you.

Thank you so much!! My Jaguar is the one without Duncan pickups. There are 3 models: the one with HB pickup, the one that you have found, and the other, with Fender pickups.
I am living in Sweden

OK, I think I have it now. This is the other Jaguar bass with the Fender pickups:

The great thing about most of the Fender designs is how well the pickups can be changed.
Fender has become a standard that companies like Duncan can fit accurately.

Evan Skopp is someone who sells Duncan products to suppliers and retailers around the world. He's an administrator here, on the Seymour Duncan forum.
If you send him a private message, he'll help to find someone close to you in Sweden, who can sell you the right pickup model.
Tell him "Ginormous" sent you! ;)

Thank you again! Do you think that I can use the ones that you have suggested??

Re: Pickups for FENDER SQUIER VINT MOD JAGUAR BASS SP

Since they fit the standard Fender design for the Precision and Jazz models, I'm pretty sure they'll fit well.

Dear manufelices, thanks for posting and welcome to the SDUGF.

As for which pickups to replace the stock ones, I would first ask you, "What is there about the original pickups that you want to upgrade?" If, for example, you want more output and punch for playing rock, I might point you to the Quarter-Pound P-J pickups. If you want more high-end clarity, I would suggest the Vintage P-J pickups. If you want a modern sound, I would suggest the Pro-Active P-J set. There are many tonal options.

In any event, all of these pickups are available in Sweden. You can check with Seymour Duncan's Swedish distributor for a list of dealers new you.

Best of luck in your tone quest.

My bass has that first bass up top, they're mega-bang for the buck. Stock pups are good Dunc Designed but he swapped 'em for a Quarter Pounder set. Massive sounding bass indeed!

We actually re-wired it too. Got rid of the concentric pots and put in 2 vol 1 tone and make it a sidejack

I'd just use the quarter pound versions of both pickups. you can't go wrong dude.

+1

QPs will up the output sufficiently to compensate for any shortcomings in the timbers and hardware. They also have better recognition if the time ever comes to sell. Bartolinis, for example, might well be better bass pickups but the majority of possible future buyers will not appreciate them.

I notice that the OP never returned to state any specific dislikes of the stock pickups. I have a pair of the Duncan Designed Jazz Bass pickups in a Squier VM series fretless bass. They suit the instrument better than any of the more expensive replacements that I tested, including SD/Basslines AJJ-2 Lightnin' Rods.

I don't know anything about the Duncan Designed, but I'm curious as to what you mean by those suiting the instrument better. (I'm not doubting you, I just wonder what you mean.)

Re: Pickups for FENDER SQUIER VINT MOD JAGUAR BASS SP

I have certain sonic and dynamic expectations of a Fender Jazz style bass guitar. These seem to be best met by passive pickups and a simple VVT control layout. I expect a maple-necked CBS style model to clank and pop like Geddy Lee and Marcus Miller. I expect a Sixties style alder/rosewood style model to sound somewhere early John Paul Jones and Jaco Pastorius. Growly. Soulful.

The Squier fretless VM Jazz Bass gets the vibe that I sought with its stock Duncan Designed pickups. The bridge position pickup is a fair bit hotter than the neck unit. Hot enough to use on its own.

Clearly, the Squier VM is not competition for a Fender AVRI model, let alone the Custom Shop Pastorius Tribute. It is, however, still enormous fun and plenty good enough for recording.

Hello all, I am interested In the same bass. I know the Short scale bass can be modded. But I want the full scaled 34". However its got an "active bass boost" circuit. Would it still be possible to use SPB-3 quarter pounders in this bass? I am new to the forum and any help would be appreciated. I have been searching for answers for hours. Thanks in advance.
