Hi, I have Jackson Concept JDR94 with stock pickups and I'm going to change them so I'd think of SD Pickups. After reading and hearing lots of reviews, I could say I'm between the JB, custom and custom custom for the bridge, and 59 and Jazz for the neck.
The guitar has basswood body + maple neck + rosewood fretboard
I wil be using it 50% metal (mainly progressive, trash and alternative), 30 rock (progressive and experimental), 20% other (maybe jazz and not genre specific music).
Some music I would really like the PUs to be able to "adapt" to:
- Megadeth Youthanasia (or more "tight/ strong" too). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nBY40Bdan0#t=111
- Tool https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiR1hmpk-x4#t=324
- Pink floyd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU-OSLBKwG0#t=271
As I said I went across a lot of reviews, but they usually say contradictory things (which I think is logical because guitars and ears are different), so I'm trying to be a little more specific about the woods and the model so maybe someone has tried them all in similar conditions and can give me some specific advice. I also heard the SD sample sounds but they contradict with the reviews (e.g: JB being the worst at cleans, when in sample it's at least not the muddiest)
Questions:
1) I would like to have some versatility with an expressful/"alive" tone that also has enough punch to do some heavy metal (which I think matches with the Megadeth's and Tool's songs fragment I've presentend ) so which humbuckers set will go better with my guitar and my preferences?
2) Which are the pros of each combination? (JB + jazz / jb + 59 / custom + 59/ etc)
3) Taking into account that I'm not changing the single coil PU (the one in the middle, which is not good), which will be the best way to set the 5 way pickup selector?
4) Someone talk me about the push-pull setup , it really worth it ? has it any drawbacks?
5) Additionally which strings do you recommend between Ernie Ball Regular Slinky & Super Slinky? What are the pro/cons of each other?
If you give me the choice right now, I would go with JB+Jazz because there are several samples and they sound quite right to me (here someone with the JDR94 + jb + jazz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JljYtQnEiA4), but I would like to hear from your experience so maybe I can change my mind.
Thanks in advance! (and sorry if my english sounds weird, it's not my native language).
