Hey guys! Long ago I had a 'which pickup' thread and now Im doing it again... Mainly because my stlye of music has changed a lot! :D

Ill be getting a cort cr280 les paul copy. Pretty cheap mahogany body guitar. Love it :). http://www.cortguitars.com/_webapp_3760378/CR280# Read the specs. :bling:

My style of music -
Some classic rock
Hard rock
Punk rock
Clean stuff
Metal
And metalcore too :).
But nothing more than that!

I play a lot of slash, bullet for my valentine, Iron Maiden, Green Day, AC/DC etc etc.
And I also need pickups that are more sensitive to pinch harmonics and they should sound awesome if I do it properly :D.

Thanks! Hope for a reply soon!

TB-5 Custom in the bridge.
59 or A2P in the neck.

This is good.

Might consider a pair of 59's, depending on the amp/fx.

Also, Dimiarzio SuperDistortion in the bridge might be good.

Nothing beats the JB-59 combination. Buy this pair and use it on all of your guitars and you'll be finely suited to any kind of music. Don't listen to the naysayers condemning JB as ill-fated for mahogany guitar. I have JBs on two mahogany-bodied LP copies and they are the best.

You're new here, and haven't read the many, many posts of JB owners who had bad experiences with JB's in mahogany, especially LP's. Yes, they can work well in mahogany and LP's, but they also have a higher-than-average failure rate. The fact is, JB's are pretty fussy about the wood they're in, which is acknowledged by most forum members, even the guys that love them. They were designed for bright woods, and that's where they shine. Look at the big picture. It's not a PU to recommend to everyone for every guitar. That advice has led to a lot of disappointment.

Alright thanks for all the help but this is way too confusing. Too many combos.
I currently own a vypyr 15 modelling amp and dont underestimate it just because its a modeller or because its cheap. It kicks ass. And I wont get a tube amp any time soon and ill probably invest in a good amp modeller like the pod hd or get another vypyr.
If I go tube, Ill spend a lot lot more and buy a peavey classic 30 and a bunch of pedals. BUT that isnt gonna happen any time soon.
So About the pickups, I need crisp clear distortion with very very low mud. You guys should try listening to the song canon rock by jerryC http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TButdrKvqc.
Thats the kinda sound Im looking for on the bridge and it should be tight and single notes should sound really thick and heavy and it should also capture harmonics better... And any neck pickup thats really versatile and it should go really well with the bridge :).

I like the SH-5 Custom pretty much. And I heard the samples on the website and I liked it a lot. But I think the JB sounds a little better clean... And I couldnt tell a huge difference between the '59, Jazz or the pearly gates neck but I liked Jazz the most. Will the SH-5 be good for the type of sound im trying to get (Link in my last post)? BTW I own a modeller and I wont be getting a tube amp any time soon :P!

Don't go by the samples. Your guitar, wood, amp, and effects are going to be different than what was used. You cannot listen to a PU in a guitar and think that if you buy that PU it's guaranteed to sound the same in yours. That's why we end up tweaking our tones with magnets, pots, and resisitors.

I don't know man. It just sounds right to me, output wise, clarity wise, not too sensitive, not too hot, not too bright or muddy. Just perfect and I have that in 2 mahogany LP. I trust what I hear not what people say. I think Di Marzio Evolution sucks for example, even though Steve Vai worships it.

Yes, JB's can and do work well in mahogany, but not on a reliable basis. When they don't it, it has been described as 'atrocious'. Warm woods can bring out an 'ice pick spike' high end, and a 'farty' low end. The sound has been compared to the blare of a cheap, old trumpet.

There are lots of stories of JB's sounding great in mahogany and warm woods, and simultaneously, stories of disasters. JB's are a very controversial PU because of that. Many fans and many detractors. For my guitars and my uses, JB's only work with a mag swap. If I was playing '80's metal with a super Strat, I'd love stock JB's. For that, it's one of the best choices. But many of us play other music on other guitars, and that's when JB's start to let people down on a hit or miss basis.

Ok so between the sh-5 custom and the super distortion. Which one? And Which Neck pickup? I posted two links in my last post. Check em out.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany bodied les paul copy for most types of music.

59/PG/A2P neck - any depending on your taste. I like the PG first, then, 59, then A2P

Custom bridge - just rocks period.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany bodied les paul copy for most types of music.

Ok guys by custom you do mean the sh-5 right? And some people say pearly gates neck is really good with the custom? True?
