Pickups for Mahogany RG

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

The Air Norton's cleans surprised me, they are actually pretty nice. The pickup really isn't all that hot, but I was still expecting pretty anemic clean tones.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

Any good neck pickup from Dimarzio or Duncan that has really great cleans as well as lead tones?

The Jazz is fantastic for both, IMO.

While I myself am not a fan of EMG's, I think that they are the tone you're looking for (esp Metallica). If that's the case, just try them out. If you don't like them, then try something different.

The lead singer from one of my previous bands used an X2N in the bridge of his Ibanez and it screamed. Didn't have much of a clean tone, however. I guess you could use the neck for your clean tone as long as you pick the right neck pickup...

There's a clip of a guy with an ibanez and a tone zone in te neck, and it sounds incredible, search on youtube

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

Here's what I've tried - superstrat mahogany body, mahogany neck, wilkinson. I look for excellent cleans, good Angus OD, and old-school punk (pistols et al)

Jazz neck - great, keeping it

For the bridge:

CC - best so far: Screams with higain, good old school rock tones with OD, very nice & sweet clean, but low end a bit wooly, looking for tighter.

Breed Neck - great, except for some upper mids that made clean tones just hurt. Had to put mid on 0 in the amp! Screamed with OD tho'.

Tone Zone - good solid low end, a bit of chime on the high end, mids are a bit much, not a muddy mess but not much air in the thing.

FRED - too bright in this guitar - might have been those tweaked mids, turned out like a screamin demon. GREAT int he SG, though.

I'm trying the Dimarzio paf hot or Blues Saraceno next.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

Hmm, I think I may have to go with the Jazz in the neck, it seems that it's well praised, but I'm struggling to find a bridge pickup for thrash metal, but can handle modern stuff as well.

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

I've been searching and have found out some good info on the Custom and Distortion, which one would nail a thick metal tone ie. Metallica, Megadeth, and maintain clarity for some modern stuff as well?

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

Here's another for the D Sonic. Thick and powerful yet articulate enough for any kind of speed you can throw at it. Petrucci uses it...

For the neck I like the Breed and the Air Norton. I have a Jazz I've been meaning to try too...

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

the distortion is great. it'll take whatever style you throw at it. the name is really misleading imo. it sounds huge i think, and its still really clear and articulate. great for leads and riffs, and power chords have a good sting to them...everything overall has a big nasty snarling bite to it

Re: Pickups for Mahogany RG

i've gotta chuck in the fact that fitting EMGs will need wood taken out of that beautiful RG.. unless you're desperate, i'd put them on a scratchplate or mounting ring style guitar and keep this one nice!

i had an acquaintance who fitted custom/jazz into that same model rg.. he always sounded pretty good! :)
