Pickups for my hollow body artcore

I would like to upgrade the stock pickups in my Ibanez AG-75 hollow guitar. Its not full hollow, but its thicker than semi hollow. Its this guitar.
I am considering the hot rodded set, because I want one of the pickups to do more bright clean tones and the second to do more warm, jazzy cleans.
I can get it for nicer price than to get one 59 and one jazz HB for example.
I want to get nice cleans, the distorted sound isnt too much important for me...
I think that the 59 models would be too much dark, warm, jazzy for me, I want to get brighter sounds out of it too...

Please if you can, help, I am considering this upgrade for a long time, but I cannot decide which ones to get, its pretty much money for me.

Thanx a lot...

Actually the 59 would be too bright in the bridge for that guitar,i have a pearly gates in the bridge and a jazz in the neck of my artcore ag-75 ;)
the antiqutys and seth lover are great for it too :)

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

I'm using Gibson Burstbuckers in my 335 copy. They work nicely for clean and crunch. One factor that influenced my decision to put them in, though, was that they were cheap. $100 for the pair (used). I probably would have gone a different route if I had to purchase them new.

I agree w/the suggestion of Antiquitys or Seth Lovers.

Another vote for Seths!

Ever considered Phat Cats?...just a thought.

Good luck with getting the tone you are searching for.

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

If that were mine, I'd put some TVtrons in it.

But for what you describe, those wouldn't be my first choices. Some good suggestions here already, so I'll make one slightly different, just to add another option: a set of Jazzes. That's a very cool pickup, with way more versatility than the name might imply.

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

Ive never really worked on a hollowbody...but here goes.

as it is hollow...anything too hot might produce feedback.

not cool hendrix feedback

but lame ah **** spinal tap feedback.

even if im wrong about that, i do know this: really think about your selection before you install it.

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

How does the guitar sound now? What are you unhappy about? Is the guitar to bright or to dark?

I have 2 Semi hollows. One is a 335 which is from the early 80's and it has the stock PAF RI pickups ( I don't think Gibson makes them anymore) Very nice sounding guitar all around...... My favorite HB guitar.

I also have a Thin line Telecaster which has a Mahogony body and a Flame maple cap, so it is very Les Paulish in construction, but Semi hoolow. I have a Jazz in the Neck and 59 in the bridge. and it rivals my 335. As I asked before much of the pickups suggested here would solve a particular issue so what is it you are trying to fix?

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

So I am discarding the JB in the neck option.
I am using an Epiphone Valve Junior amp btw.

The guitar sounds too muddy now, especially in the neck pickup.

Yes, I have heard about Phat Cats, but I dunno about them, it looks for me like more experimental way, or maybe its for somebody who wants a singlecoil sound out of the guitar. Wouldnt the guitar sound thinner with this kind of pickups?

I want to retain the jazzbox character of this guitar, but I want it to be versatile too. Maybe a jazzy pickup in the bridge (jazz) and a more versatile in the neck, maybe the ´59. Or that Seth Lover...
Looks like the best option...

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

Most jazz sound before 1957 were made by a p90. The Phat Cat is its humbucker sized grandson. Great combo in Jazz boy is a Phat Cat in the neck a DiMarzio VPAF (or a PG or a Seth). These P90 in the neck sense the string only at one pole piece though the tone is not that muddy like a humbucker.

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

I love my Phat Cat loaded Sheraton. It really captures a lot of the old school jazz vibe when I need it, but can still spit and growl with the best when I throw some gain at it.

Never played Phat Cats, but P-90's are anything but thin, and I'm sure Phat Cats are the same way. Yes, they are a single coil, but they are NOTHING like a Fender single coil.

Put this way----Does George Thorogood's tone sound thin? There ya go, he's a bonafide P-90 man, all the way.

I love those Artcores. They are such cool guitars with awesome prices. I wish they would make a baritone version. But for the needs you describe, either a pair of 59s or a pair of DiMarzio Air Nortons seem like they would be cool choices.

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

Phat Cats!!!!! They own everything else in a hollowbody!

Re: Pickups for my hollow body artcore

I use a JB @ the bridge and a 59 @ the kneck on my Artcore.
I love it clean and with a little crunch.

. . .and my pu's are gonna get replaced early next year with a set of Phat Cat's :smokin:

First i wanted to drop some TV-Jones, ala, Gretsch, in there but the P90'ish tone is just what i wanted !

So the TV-Jones pu's will be going into my next Artcore :fingersx:

Here is some PHAT CAT Clips - very hard to come by, these days !
(i asked on various forums for over a year now, and these are by far the best - there isn't even any on the SD-site !!!)

. . . scroll down, to "Motorheds" post - 4th from the bottom !
