Pickups for neo classical metal

Hey people, i m new to the board and was just wondering if you could help.

I currently have a peavey v type guitar - (alder body, maple thru neck, locking trem and a rosewood fretboard - http://www.peavey.com/products/brow...046/number/00463460/cat/59/V-Type?+NTB+TR.cfm) and i m looking to change the stock pickups.

I play all types of styles from blues to death metal but mostly neo classical metal and heavy metal. So i m looking for a bridge and neck pickup that have lots of clarity, warmth and a full sound. E.g Jason Becker, Chuck Schuldiner, Michael Amott, Steve Morse etc. The neck pickup must not get muddy during distorted leads.

My gear also consists of a marshall jcm 2000 dsl100 and 1960a cab and a kramer vanguard with a custom/custom in the bridge which i must say sounds awesome.

Hope you can help
Many thanks

When you find it, let me know!!!

The Evolution is pretty nice...but not warm.
The D-Sonic is warmer, and has a fairly clear, full sound.

The Virtual Hot PAF is pretty nice overall, but it does have a kind of "3D" sound, which is great for solos, but I dislike it somewhat for fast riffage.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

SH-12 Screamin Demon/SH-10n Full Shred.

I'm a neoclassical guitarist & that's my combo.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

PATB (pick your model for output) for the bridge and a Full Shred neck - you don't find much more clarity than that.

...send me your old pickups...lol. I love those stock Peavey pups for the bridge, lots of oomph and bite, kind of like a Steve's Special from Dimarzio, but more output. Those are decent pups (I find the neck model a little flat myself, but not horrible sounding) and hold their own quite well against my Duncan loaded guitars.

If you want clarity in the neck you'll find nothing clearer than the Jazz or Full Shred. The Distortion neck is pretty clear as well, but it is warmer and less articulate than the other two I mentioned.

For the bridge, I would go with the Distortion as my first choice. Others to look at might be the Custom and Full Shred. With the right amp, any of those pickups will do what you want.

It's pretty clear you HAVE to get the Full Shred neck pickup, otherwise you'll have the hounds of Blackmore on your ass!

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

Hey people, cheers for the responses, i m going with a Full Shred in the neck, but i still can't decide for the bridge, i m thinking either the PATdistortion, custom/custom (as i really like its sound) or a dimarzio x2n , as one of my fave guitarists used it.

I was just thinkiing if anyone thinks these are good choices? and whats the difference between the custom/custom and the custom?

Many thanks

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

ive never used a x2n but they sure do look cool.

i just dont like how bassy dimarzios sound in general

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

Not sure I'd go with the Custom Custom for your style of music. Pick a pickup that one of your favorite artist uses.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

Full Shred, Distortion, Custom and Demon can do it easily I think. C5 and JB follow closely.
For DM I'd choose DropSonic, Steve's Special or the Evolution (the Diver like I call it - the ultimate pup for tremolo work).

Tough decision...if you ask me.

SH-12 Screamin Demon/SH-10n Full Shred.

I'm a neoclassical guitarist & that's my combo.

So am I , with a Screaming Demon with alnico 8 and a Jazz neck with air gap and alnico 8 !
A bit twiky though , but for a heavier Malmsteen tone !
The air-Jazz-8 is pretty amazing .

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

How about Full Shred in the bridge and Custom 5 on the neck? The full shred I got was for the neck but I putted that on the bridge instead. I just got back to pick up the guitar today, and they sound great.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

I'm telling you guys, the Full Shred rocks in the bridge. It's clear and not too buzzy. I think it sounds great for YJM type licks for sure. It's a pretty HiFi pickup...somewhat like I think the ideal DiMarzio would be.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

Neoclassical and heavy metal?

first thing that comes to mind for the bridge is either a DD or a JB.
JB does well in clarity and a full sound. and adds alittle more versatility than the DD. I have an X2N in my king V, doesnt suit anything else but metal. lots of highs and crunch, doesnt get very bassy, but the cleans are pretty much terrible IMO.

neck i'd go for the paf pro, goes with high gain very well, very nice soloing tone for me, personally.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

I would personally go for an Invader. Something beefy and not too clean sounding. It'd make me work on my muting technique a lot as well as accuracy.

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

What about Livewires? Maybe even without using the Metal in the bridge...
They should give you clarity...

Re: Pickups for neo classical metal

How about a Dimarzio Mega Drive. I have an old Tony MacAlpine video were he uses one and the tone was pretty clear under gain.
