pickups for power metal?

Re: pickups for power metal?

The over-bright problem could be the stock pickups, not the guitar. How does it sound unplugged?

As others have suggested, I think you should start with the time-tested, mother-approved combos, especially if you're new to the Insanity That Is Pickup Swapping.

My humble suggestions:

Custom/59
JB/59

Where are you living? If in the US, then buy the pickups new and take advantage of the return policy if necessary.

If you want more aggression in the bridge, put in a Distortion. If you want less attitude or snarl in the bridge, try a Custom-Custom or even a 59!

If the neck seems muddy rather than fat and singing, use a Jazz or Full Shred instead.

There are too many choices out there, but there's a reason why the Custom/59 and JB/Jazz combos are SO popular. I love those tone combinations so much, I use BachToRock's hybrids of those very same pickups to get them all in one pickup! (JB/Custom bridge and Jazz/59 neck)

And if it still seems too bright, tweak the treble on your amp! :laugh2:

Cheers

Re: pickups for power metal?

An evo II might be a good choice you have clarity but the top end is not at all harsh so it can do well witha strat type or les paul type guitar, and in my personal opinion the tone is more satch than vai at least to my ears anyway. Yuo may also like the paf joe in the neck position. Its what satriani uses and it works weel in a les paul type of guitar as thats what my blues bird is, basically a chambered les paul.
